How to Fix Alexa Stuck on Updating Device Software

Amazon Echo devices can sometimes get stuck on the “updating device software” screen, leaving Alexa completely unresponsive. Here are all the proven methods to fix this issue and get your Echo working again.

Method 1: Power Cycle Your Echo Device

A simple power cycle clears temporary software glitches that commonly cause updates to freeze mid-process.

  1. Unplug the power adapter from your Echo device.
  2. Wait at least 30 seconds.
  3. Plug the power adapter back in.
  4. Wait for the device to fully boot up and attempt the update again.
  5. If the light ring settles to its normal state, the issue is resolved.

Method 2: Check Your Wi-Fi Connection

Alexa needs a stable internet connection to download and install updates. A weak or intermittent signal is one of the most common reasons updates get stuck.

  1. Open a browser on your phone and load any website to confirm your internet is working.
  2. Run a speed test at fast.com to check your connection stability.
  3. Restart your router by unplugging it for 30 seconds and plugging it back in.
  4. Wait two minutes for the router to fully restart.
  5. Open the Alexa app and verify your Echo shows as online under Devices.

Method 3: Move Your Echo Closer to the Router

If your Echo is far from the router or behind thick walls, the Wi-Fi signal may be too weak to download the update.

  1. Unplug your Echo from its current location.
  2. Place it within 10 to 15 feet of your Wi-Fi router.
  3. Plug the Echo back in and let it boot up.
  4. Allow the device to attempt the update from this closer position.
  5. Once the update completes, move the Echo back to its original spot.

Method 4: Check for Amazon Service Outages

The problem may not be on your end. Amazon’s servers can experience downtime that prevents devices from completing updates.

  1. Visit downdetector.com and search for “Amazon Alexa” to check for reported issues.
  2. Search X (Twitter) for “Alexa update stuck” to see if the issue is widespread.
  3. If there is a confirmed outage, wait for Amazon to resolve it before retrying.

Method 5: Update the Alexa App

An outdated Alexa app on your phone can interfere with the device update process.

  1. Open the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play Store (Android).
  2. Search for “Amazon Alexa.”
  3. If an Update button appears, tap it to install the latest version.
  4. Open the updated app and check your Echo’s status under Devices.

Method 6: Deregister and Re-Register Your Echo

Deregistering removes the Echo from your Amazon account and clears its connection data. Re-registering creates a fresh link that can resolve persistent update problems.

  1. Open the Alexa app on your phone.
  2. Tap Devices at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Select Echo & Alexa, then tap your stuck device.
  4. Scroll down and tap Deregister, then confirm.
  5. Tap the + icon in the Alexa app and select Add Device.
  6. Follow the setup instructions to register the Echo again.
  7. The device will download the latest software during setup.

Method 7: Factory Reset Your Echo

A factory reset erases all settings and returns your Echo to its original state. This fixes deep software corruption that other methods cannot.

  1. For Echo 4th Gen and newer: Press and hold the Action button for 20 to 25 seconds until the light ring turns orange.
  2. For Echo 3rd Gen: Press and hold the Microphone Off and Volume Down buttons for 20 seconds.
  3. For Echo Show devices: Press and hold the Mute and Volume Down buttons for 15 seconds.
  4. Wait for the device to fully reset and enter setup mode.
  5. Set up the device as new through the Alexa app.

Method 8: Contact Amazon Support

If nothing else works, the issue may be a hardware defect. Amazon support can run remote diagnostics and offer a replacement if your Echo is under warranty.

  1. Go to amazon.com/hz/contact-us and sign in.
  2. Select your Echo device from your registered devices.
  3. Choose your preferred contact method: Chat, Phone, or Email.
  4. Explain the issue and the troubleshooting steps you have already tried.
