5G is still in its infancy, but Samsung is already working on 6G

5G data has hardly been adopted, but a new report says that Samsung is already working on and researching 6G network technology.

This report comes by way of The Korea Herald, where Samsung told the outlet that “the current team on telecommunications technology standards has been expanded to start leading research on the 6G network.”

This doesn’t necessarily come as a surprise. Phone manufacturers like Samsung are often working on products that are a few years out, so already researching 6G technology for its phones is a natural step forward.

We certainly don’t think that we’ll be seeing 6G as the standard for some time now. Carriers are still working out the kinks in 5G technology. AT&T itself doesn’t even have a fully functioning 5G network, current only supporting a 4G LTE spin-off that it’s calling 5G E.

So for now, expect carriers to focus on their 5G networks, and device manufacturers to launch 5G-capable phones. 6G will be interesting, but we’re a bit far out to consider it seriously.
