Yahoo Sports OneClick Chrome Extension Beware Before Installing

If you’re a sports fan, you likely use sports sites like ESPN and Yahoo Sports to check scores.  And recently, if you go on Sports Yahoo Sports site on your PC chrome browser, you might see a prompt to download a Chrome extension for live sports score.

We tried the extension, and it actually works great. There’s a drop down menu to check out scores for different sports.  It’s a neat app for people that love to follow sports scores and don’t want to open up a new browser page just to check score.  So for the functionality, we give it a thumbs up.

Yahoo Sports OneClick Install Warning

Now what they don’t disclose (at least in plain view, maybe in legal disclosure somewhere) is that they will change your Chrome browser settings.

Two settings gets changed once you install the extension:

  1. Default search engine in Chrome to Yahoo search.  Exactly…who the heck uses Yahoo search engine!  If you are used to entering your search directly in the browser URL address bar, that search will now lead you to Yahoo search.  Most people likely have Google search as their default search engine and prefer their search results.  So the Yahoo Sports OneClick extension will change your default search engine to Yahoo search (without even you opting in).
  2. If you typically prefer a blank tab when you open up your Chrome browser, the Yahoo Sports OneClick will invade your privacy by opting you into the Yahoo front page as your new Chrome home page.  It changes your “Open the New Tab page” setting to Yahoo front page.

Sneaky move Yahoo.  Our guess is that people will revolt and this will backfire big time if the settings isn’t changed.  Or they should hope, for their own sake, that this extension does not catch on with users and there’s no user base to make a difference.
