How to Fix Xbox One That Keeps Freezing

An Xbox One that constantly freezes during gameplay or on the dashboard usually has overheating, storage, or software issues. These methods will help you fix the freezing problem.

Method 1: Clear the Cache

  1. Press and hold the Xbox button on the console for 10 seconds until it shuts off.
  2. Unplug the power cable from the back of the console.
  3. Wait 30 seconds.
  4. Plug the power cable back in.
  5. Press the Xbox button to turn it on.
  6. This clears the system cache and can resolve freezing.

Method 2: Check for Overheating

  1. Make sure your Xbox One has at least 4-6 inches of clearance on all sides.
  2. Remove any objects blocking the ventilation grills.
  3. Clean dust from the vents using compressed air.
  4. Place the console on a hard, flat surface (not carpet or fabric).
