Tesla Model X Falcon Door Only Opens Halfway – How to Fix It

If your Tesla Falcon Wing door only opens halfway, it’s often due to sensor interference, low power, or configuration settings. Here’s a complete guide to troubleshoot and fix the issue step by step.

Method 1: Check for Obstructions or Sensor Interference

  1. Open the Falcon Wing door and inspect the hinges, joints, and surrounding area for any objects or debris blocking the motion.
  2. Clean the ultrasonic sensors located around the door and roof with a microfiber cloth to remove dirt or moisture.
  3. Ensure you’re not in a tight space like a low-ceiling garage , the sensors might be limiting the opening to avoid collisions.
  4. Try opening the door in an open area (outside, flat space) to test if it opens fully.

Method 2: Disable Obstacle-Aware Opening (Temporarily)

  1. Enter your Tesla and tap on Controls > Locks > Falcon Door Obstacle-Aware Opening.
  2. Toggle it off. This disables the feature that limits door motion when it thinks there’s a nearby object.
  3. Attempt to open the door again in a wide, clear area.
  4. Re-enable Obstacle-Aware Opening after confirming the door functions normally.

Method 3: Perform a Soft Reboot

  1. Sit in the driver’s seat and ensure the vehicle is in Park.
  2. Hold down both scroll wheels on the steering wheel until the screen goes black and the Tesla logo appears.
  3. Wait for the system to restart and then try opening the Falcon Wing door again.

Method 4: Calibrate the Door Open Height

  1. Fully open the Falcon Wing door manually by pressing and holding the door open button until it reaches the desired height.
  2. On the touchscreen, a prompt may appear to Save this door open position. Tap Yes or Save.
  3. The system will now remember this open height for future openings at this location.

Method 5: Check Battery Charge Level

  1. If the 12V battery is weak or low, it may affect door operation.
  2. On the touchscreen, go to Controls > Service > Battery and check battery status.
  3. If you see any warning or if the car is having other power-related issues, schedule service or charge the battery.

Method 6: Software Update

  1. Ensure your Tesla is running the latest firmware.
  2. Go to Controls > Software and check for updates.
  3. If available, connect to Wi-Fi and install the latest update to fix potential bugs affecting door operation.

Method 7: Use the Manual Override (If Stuck)

  1. If the door stops halfway and is unresponsive, you can use the emergency manual release.
  2. Locate the emergency release cable (refer to the owner’s manual) , typically found behind a cover near the rear side panel.
  3. Pull the cable gently to disengage the motor and then manually open the door.

Method 8: Contact Tesla Service

  1. If none of the above methods work, open the Tesla app.
  2. Tap on Service > Request Service > Falcon Wing Door Issue.
  3. Describe the issue and book a mobile or in-shop appointment for inspection.
