Samsung’s AI Called User Photos ‘Idiot Photos’: What Happened & How to Control AI Albums
Samsung’s AI-powered photo organization feature recently made headlines when users discovered the system had been automatically categorizing their photos into an album labeled Idiot Photos. This revelation sparked widespread discussion about AI labeling and user privacy.
What Is the AI Photo Album Feature?
Samsung’s Gallery app uses on-device AI to automatically organize photos into categories. The AI analyzes image content, faces, locations, and objects to create smart albums. This feature was designed to help users manage large photo libraries more efficiently.
How Did This Happen?
The AI system created the controversial album based on facial recognition and photo analysis. Users found that photos showing awkward expressions, blurry shots, or repeated similar images were grouped together under the unfortunate label. The AI was attempting to categorize low-quality or embarrassing photos separately.
How to Control AI Albums
1. Open Samsung Gallery app
2. Tap Menu > Settings > Albums
3. Toggle off AI-powered organization
4. Or, manually rename/delete unwanted AI albums
5. Go to Privacy settings to limit AI photo access
Turning Off AI Features
If you prefer manual organization, you can disable AI features entirely. Navigate to Settings > Advanced features > Labs and turn off Photo suggestions and Auto organization.
Samsung has acknowledged the issue and is working on better labeling for AI-generated albums. In the meantime, users have full control over these features and can customize or disable them as needed.
