Make Google News Show U.S. Headlines Instead of Local Stories
Google News tailors stories to your location by default, which can bury national headlines. Use the steps below to force the U.S. edition across desktop and mobile and keep it that way.
Method 1: Force the U.S. Edition by URL
- Open this exact URL: https://news.google.com/?hl=en-US&gl=US&ceid=US:en
- Bookmark it and use this bookmark every time
- Optional: add it to your browser’s startup pages so it always opens as U.S.
Method 2: Change Region Inside Google News
- Go to news.google.com and sign in
- Select the gear icon Settings
- Set Region to United States and Language to English United States
- Refresh the page to apply
Method 3: Lock U.S. Language and Region in Google Account
- Visit myaccount.google.com
- Open Languages and set English United States
- Open Region and set United States
- Return to Google News and reload
Method 4: Block Site Location so Local Stories Don’t Creep Back
- While on news.google.com, click the lock icon in your browser’s address bar
- Open Site settings
- Set Location to Block
- Reload the page
Method 5: Mobile App U.S. Edition
- Open the Google News app
- Tap profile photo Settings Language and region
- Set Language to English United States and Region to United States
- Force close and reopen the app
Method 6: Mobile App Permissions Stop Location Pull
- On iOS: Settings Google News Location Never
- On Android: Settings Apps Google News Permissions Location Don’t allow
- Reopen the app to refresh the feed
Method 7: Manually Train Your Feed Toward U.S. Sources
- On Google News, open Following
- Unfollow your city or regional topics
- Follow national outlets Reuters AP NBC News CBS News ABC News USA Today Wall Street Journal Washington Post Fox News Bloomberg NPR
- On any local card, click More Not interested in stories about this area
Method 8: Use Query Parameters Anywhere
- Append these to any Google News URL to force U.S.: hl=en-US gl=US ceid=US:en
- Example: https://news.google.com/topstories?hl=en-US&gl=US&ceid=US:en
- Save custom bookmarks for sections like Business, Technology, or Sports with those parameters
Method 9: Clear Local Bias From History
- Visit myactivity.google.com
- In Web and App Activity, review and delete location-heavy activity if desired
- Turn off Location History if you don’t want local tuning going forward
Method 10: Reset For You Recommendations
- In Google News Settings, open Preferences or Manage interests
- Remove local interests and add national-level topics like U.S. politics, U.S. economy, Supreme Court, Congress, Federal agencies
- On cards you don’t want, choose Fewer stories like this repeatedly to retrain
Method 11: Desktop Browser-Specific Location Controls
- Chrome: three-dot menu Settings Privacy and security Site settings Location add https://news.google.com to Not allowed
- Edge: three-dot menu Settings Cookies and site permissions Location block news.google.com
- Firefox: about:preferences Privacy Security Permissions Location Settings block news.google.com
- Safari macOS: Safari Settings Websites Location set news.google.com to Deny
Method 12: Make It Stick With Pinned Tabs or Startup Pages
- Set the exact U.S. URL as a pinned tab
- Add it to On startup Open a specific page in your browser settings
- Use this page when creating a desktop shortcut or dock icon
Method 13: Flush App Cache if the Feed Won’t Switch Android
- Settings Apps Google News Storage and cache
- Tap Clear cache then Clear storage data
- Reopen the app and redo Method 5
Method 14: Signed-Out vs Signed-In Behavior
- If signed out, rely on URL parameters and browser location blocks Methods 1 and 4
- If signed in, also set account language and region Method 3 so the preference syncs across devices
Method 15: Avoid Conflicts From Corporate or School Accounts
- If using a work or school Google account, switch to your personal account in the profile menu
- Repeat Methods 2 and 3 on the personal account so admin policies don’t override your region
Method 16: Create Quick-Access Shortcuts iOS and Android
- iOS Safari: open the U.S. URL share icon Add to Home Screen
- Android Chrome: open the U.S. URL three-dot menu Add to Home screen
- Launch Google News from this shortcut to keep U.S. headlines
Method 17: Check ChromeOS and Windows Widgets
- ChromeOS News and weather widgets can use device location; set Region to United States and disable location for the widget
- Windows widgets or Start menu news may differ; open their settings and select United States region to avoid mixed signals
Method 18: Separate Google Discover From Google News
- Discover is the Google app feed and follows device location strongly
- In the Google app profile photo Settings General Discover toggles and Interests remove local topics and add national ones, or turn Discover off to prevent local bleed-over into News usage
