How the iPhone’s Emergency SOS Works

The Emergency SOS feature on iPhones allows users to quickly and easily call emergency services and notify their emergency contacts. When activated, the phone dials the local emergency number and sends a text message to the user’s pre-set emergency contacts, sharing their location and the fact that they have called for help.

Activation Methods

  • iPhone 8 or later: Press and hold the side button along with one of the volume buttons until the Emergency SOS slider appears. Drag the slider to call emergency services.
  • iPhone 7 or earlier: Rapidly press the side (or top) button five times to bring up the Emergency SOS slider.

Additional Features

  • Auto Call: After the countdown ends, the device will automatically call emergency services.
  • Medical ID: First responders can access the user’s Medical ID to get information about allergies, medical conditions, and more.

Do Other Premium Phones Have This Feature?

Samsung Galaxy

Samsung Galaxy phones also offer a similar feature called “Send SOS Messages.” When activated, pressing the power button three times sends an SOS message to up to four pre-selected contacts. The message includes the user’s location, a picture taken from the front and rear cameras, and a 5-second audio recording.

Google Pixel

Google Pixel phones come with a “Personal Safety” app that includes car crash detection. The phone uses its sensors to detect a car crash and automatically calls 911 if the user is unresponsive.

Phone SOS feature

The iPhone’s SOS feature has proven its worth by potentially saving lives in emergency situations. While other premium smartphones like Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel offer similar functionalities, the seamless integration and ease of use make the iPhone’s Emergency SOS a standout feature.
