How to Stop iPhone Screen Dimming Automatically

If your iPhone keeps dimming on its own, the cause is usually auto-brightness behavior, attention settings, heat protection, or power-saving rules. These methods isolate each trigger so you can keep brightness stable.

Turn off Auto-Brightness

Auto-Brightness constantly adjusts screen luminance based on ambient light data. Disabling it gives you fixed manual control.

  1. Open Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size.
  2. Turn off Auto-Brightness.
  3. Set brightness manually from Control Center.
  4. Test in the same lighting conditions.

Disable Attention Aware features

Attention Aware can reduce brightness when eye detection changes. Turning it off prevents face-detection dimming behavior.

  1. Open Settings > Face ID & Passcode.
  2. Enter passcode.
  3. Turn off Attention Aware Features.
  4. Lock and unlock to test consistency.

Turn off True Tone and Night Shift for testing

Color and warmth adjustments can feel like dimming in certain environments. Temporarily disabling both helps isolate display adaptation effects.

  1. Open Settings > Display & Brightness.
  2. Turn off True Tone.
  3. Tap Night Shift and disable Scheduled.
  4. Check whether dimming still occurs.

Disable Low Power Mode

Low Power Mode reduces display and background behavior to conserve battery. Disabling it prevents intentional brightness reductions.

  1. Open Settings > Battery.
  2. Turn off Low Power Mode.
  3. Charge battery above 30%.
  4. Observe display brightness stability.

Check for overheating

iPhone will dim automatically during thermal events to protect hardware. Cooling the device returns brightness to normal.

  1. Remove case and stop gaming/video recording.
  2. Move phone away from direct sunlight.
  3. Allow device to cool for 10 to 15 minutes.
  4. Recheck brightness afterward.

Update iOS

Display-control bugs in iOS builds can cause unexpected dimming. Updating often includes fixes to brightness management.

  1. Open Settings > General > Software Update.
  2. Install available update.
  3. Restart iPhone.
  4. Retest for a full day.

Reset all settings

Misconfigured display and accessibility options can persist after multiple tweaks. Reset All Settings returns these controls to clean defaults.

  1. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone.
  2. Tap Reset > Reset All Settings.
  3. Enter passcode and confirm.
  4. Reconfigure only essential display options.

Test without screen protector or damaged sensor area

Poor screen protectors can interfere with ambient light sensing on some models. Removing the obstruction restores accurate sensor readings.

  1. Clean front sensor area near the notch/Dynamic Island.
  2. Temporarily remove screen protector if heavily tinted.
  3. Restart iPhone.
  4. Check if auto dimming behavior improves.
