How To Restart Fitbit Versa

How To Restart Fitbit Versa (All Models: Versa, Lite, 2, 3, and 4)

Restarting your Fitbit Versa clears temporary software glitches — frozen screens, sync failures, unresponsive touchscreens — without deleting any of your health data or settings. The steps vary by model, so this guide covers every Fitbit Versa version released as of 2026.

When Should You Restart Your Fitbit Versa?

A restart fixes most common Fitbit Versa problems that develop day-to-day, including:

  • Frozen or unresponsive screen — the display stops responding to swipes or taps
  • Sync failures — the watch stops syncing data to the Fitbit app even when Bluetooth is connected
  • Heart rate sensor errors — the watch displays dashes instead of a heart rate reading
  • App crashes — third-party apps on the watch freeze or won’t open
  • Notification delays — phone notifications stop appearing on the watch
  • GPS not acquiring — the watch times out when trying to lock GPS before a workout
  • After a software update — a restart completes the update process and clears any leftover cached errors

A restart should always be your first troubleshooting step. It takes under 30 seconds and doesn’t touch any of your data.

How to Restart the Original Fitbit Versa (1st Gen)

The first-generation Fitbit Versa has two physical buttons on its left side — a back button (top-left) and a home/app button (bottom-left). The right side has no buttons.

Steps:

  1. Press and hold the back (left) button and the bottom (left) button simultaneously.
  2. Continue holding both buttons for about 10 seconds.
  3. Release both buttons when the Fitbit logo appears on the screen.
  4. The watch will restart. You’ll feel a brief vibration when it’s done.

Important: Do not insert any object into the small hole on the left side of the watch — that’s the microphone, not a reset pin. Probing it will damage the device.

How to Restart the Fitbit Versa Lite

The Versa Lite has a single physical button on the left side. Fitbit removed the second button to lower the price point, so the restart method is different from the original Versa.

Steps:

  1. Press and hold the side button (left side of the watch).
  2. Keep holding for approximately 10 seconds until you see the Fitbit logo.
  3. Release the button and let the device complete its restart.

How to Restart the Fitbit Versa 2

The Versa 2 also has a single side button. The restart process is identical to the Versa Lite.

Steps:

  1. Press and hold the side button for about 10 seconds.
  2. When the Fitbit logo appears on the screen, release the button.
  3. The watch will vibrate once and reboot.

Via Settings menu (Versa 2):

  1. Swipe left on the watch face to access the Settings app.
  2. Scroll down and tap About.
  3. Scroll down and tap Reboot Device.

How to Restart the Fitbit Versa 3

The Versa 3 has a single side button on the left side, plus a tactile indentation (not a physical button) on the right.

Steps:

  1. Press and hold the side button (left side) for about 10 seconds.
  2. Release the button when the Fitbit logo appears.
  3. The watch will restart. If it doesn’t respond initially, keep holding — some units require up to 12 seconds.

Via Settings menu (Versa 3):

  1. Open the Settings app on the watch.
  2. Tap About.
  3. Scroll down and select Factory Reset — note this is a full factory reset, not a soft restart. Use the button method for a simple reboot.

How to Restart the Fitbit Versa 4

The Versa 4 has a single physical button on the left side. It also added a dedicated shutdown option in the Settings menu, making it the most flexible model for restarts.

Method 1: Button hold

  1. Press and hold the side button on the left side of the watch.
  2. Hold until you feel a slight vibration, then continue holding until the Fitbit logo appears.
  3. Release the button.

Method 2: Settings menu (recommended for normal use)

  1. Swipe down from the top of the watch face to open the Quick Settings menu.
  2. Scroll down and open the Settings app.
  3. Tap About.
  4. Tap Shut Down and confirm.
  5. After the screen goes dark, press the side button briefly to power back on.

What to Do When Your Fitbit Versa Won’t Restart

If holding the button doesn’t produce the Fitbit logo after 15 seconds, the device may be too low on battery to respond.

Fix 1: Charge First, Then Restart

  1. Place the Versa on its official charger.
  2. Leave it charging for at least 15 minutes — even if the screen shows nothing initially, power may be flowing.
  3. Once a charge indicator appears on screen, attempt the button-hold restart again.

A dead battery is the most common reason a Fitbit Versa appears completely unresponsive and fails to restart.

Fix 2: Update Firmware via the Fitbit App

An incomplete firmware update can cause the Versa to freeze or loop on the startup screen. To update:

  1. Open the Fitbit app on your phone.
  2. Tap your profile photo → your Versa device.
  3. Tap Update Available if the banner shows, or go to General → Software Version to manually check.
  4. Keep the watch on its charger and near your phone during the update.

Fix 3: Clean the Charging Contacts

Oxidation on the charging pins can prevent sufficient power transfer, making restarts unreliable. Use a dry toothbrush or cotton swab to gently clean the gold pins on the back of the watch and the matching pins on the charger dock.

Fix 4: Force Restart for a Frozen Screen

If the touchscreen is frozen but the watch appears powered on:

  1. Press and hold the side button (or back + bottom buttons on the 1st gen).
  2. Hold for the full 10–15 seconds even if nothing appears to happen.
  3. The screen may briefly go completely black before the Fitbit logo appears — this is normal.
  4. If after 20+ seconds nothing changes, plug the watch into its charger and try again.

Restart vs. Factory Reset: Know the Difference

A restart (also called a soft reboot) turns the device off and back on. It fixes minor glitches and clears temporary errors. No data is deleted. Your step counts, sleep logs, heart rate history, and settings remain intact.

A factory reset erases everything stored on the watch — health data not yet synced to your Fitbit account, downloaded music, Fitbit Pay cards, alarms, and app settings. Use factory reset only as a last resort when a restart doesn’t fix the problem, or when you’re giving the device to someone else.

To factory reset the Fitbit Versa 2:

  1. Open Settings on the watch.
  2. Tap AboutFactory Reset → confirm.

To factory reset the Fitbit Versa 3 or Versa 4:

  1. On the watch, go to SettingsAboutFactory Reset → confirm.

To factory reset the original Fitbit Versa (1st gen):

  1. Press and hold the back (left) + bottom (left) buttons simultaneously.
  2. When the Fitbit logo appears, release the buttons.
  3. Immediately hold the back button again until you feel a long vibration — this triggers the factory reset.

Should You Buy a Replacement Fitbit Versa?

If your Versa is out of warranty and the restart and factory reset steps haven’t resolved hardware issues like a cracked screen or dead battery, it may be time for an upgrade. The Fitbit Versa 4 is the current flagship model in the Versa line as of 2026, with GPS, 6+ day battery life, 40+ exercise modes, and Google Wallet support.
