How To Fix Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Volume Is Low

Problem: I have a 2 month old Note 9.  The ringing, notification and media speaker volumes are extremely low even when set to maximum.  This has happened within the last month or so. The original volumes were very loud. I have rebooted into safe mode and tested – the issue was not resolved.  I have turned Bluetooth off and tested – still low speaker volume. The in-call volume is fine. I have done a soft reset and retested – issues not resolved. Looking for other ideas.

Solution: Before performing any troubleshooting steps on the phone it’s a good idea to make sure that the phone is running on the latest software version. If an update is available I suggest that you backup and install it first on your phone.

Check the volume setting

The first thing you will need to do in this case is to check the phone’s volume setting and make sure that everything is set to its maximum level. To do this just press on the volume rocker button of the phone then set all the sliders for ringtone, media, notifications, and system to the maximum level.

Remove the phone case

If your phone is placed inside the case then try to remove this case then check if this will improve the sound quality of the phone. This will usually work if the case is blocking the speaker output port.

Check if the issue occurs in Safe Mode

There are instances when an app you downloaded can cause this particular problem. To check if this is the case case you should start the phone in Safe Mode as only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run in this mode.

  • Turn the device off.
  • Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen appearing on the screen.
  • When SAMSUNG appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  • Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  • Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  • When Safe mode appears in the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume down key.

In case the issue does not occur in this mode then it is most likely caused by an app you installed. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Wipe the cache partition of the phone

There are cases when the cached data stored in the dedicated partition of the phone can become corrupted. When this happens this this will usually cause certain issues to occur on the phone. To eliminate the possibility that this is what’s causing the problem you will have to wipe the cache partition of the phone from the recovery mode.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the Android logo displays, release all three keys.
  • An ‘Installing system update’ message will show for 30 – 60 seconds before the Android system recovery menu options appear.
  • Press the Volume down key several times to highlight wipe cache partition.
  • Press Power key to select.
  • Press the Volume down key to highlight yes, them and press the Power key to select.
  • When the wipe cache partition is complete, Reboot system now is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

Perform a factory reset

In case the above steps fails to fix the problem then chances are this is caused by old software data that has not been completely removed during the update process. The best way to deal with this right now is to perform a factory reset. Make sure to backup your phone data before doing the reset.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  • Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  • Press Power button to select.
  • Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  • Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  • When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

In case the above steps fails to fix the problem then you will need to bring the  phone to a service center and have it checked.
