How To Fix Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Screen Turns Black After Unlocking Screen

Problem: I have a Note 9, I got for Christmas and last night i installed the Google Find my phone app, I did not open it I just went to bed. I was going to open and install it later when I was at work, but last night I reached over to check a message and it wouldn’t unlock. Its the correct password I’ve used since I’ve bought it. It sits on the charger all night and was 100%. Now When I push the button to open it lights up normally, then it wont open the (Iris open option) it only does the pin option), normally they are both open and you can choose. I try to put in my correct passcode, and it sort of “resets” just blacks out and goes off like I push the power button, but in reality it should be opening because I just hit the code and enter. sort of blinks out, then when I try to open it again it’s the same… just never actually opens. I can pull the screen down and use some buttons that don’t require a password, and I can sort of get the camera to work with the pen. but 80% of the time i get the camera to open it just has a black screen, and won’t take a picture. I also pulled the sim/memory card and no difference, same “self sleep” . When I hold the power buttons it asks for a password, when I enter it.. click back to the start like I’ve never touched it. I SUPER don’t want to do a reset… its only 3 months old, it’s always lived in a case. For a 600-1000$ phone its beyond frustrating… And like everyone else I’ve got tons of valuable business data I really can’t loose. Any help would be great… side note, I don’t know what version i have, i know i am currently up to date, unless they just sent one out last night that bricked my phone..

Solution:  Before performing any troubleshooting steps on this phone it’s best to make sure that it is running on the latest software version. You can connect the phone to a computer with Smart Switch installed to update the device. If an update is available then I suggest that you download and install it first.

The best way to proceed in this case is to check if the problem is caused by a software glitch by following the troubleshooting steps listed below.

Do a soft reset

A soft reset is usually performed to refresh the phone software. This action usually fixes minor software glitches which could cause issues on the phone.

  • Press and hold the volume down button and don’t release it.
  • Now press and hold the Power key while holding down the volume down button.
  • Keep both keys held down together for 10 seconds or more.

Once the phone boots up check if the issue still occurs.

Check if the issue occurs in Safe Mode

There are cases when an app you downloaded will cause issues on the phone when they are installed. To check if an app you downloaded is causing the problem you will have to start the phone in Safe Mode as only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run in this mode.

  • Turn the device off.
  • Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen appearing on the screen.
  • When SAMSUNG appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  • Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  • Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  • When Safe mode appears in the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume down key.

In case the issue does not occur in this mode then it is most likely caused by an app you installed. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Wipe the cache partition of the phone

There are cases when the cached data stored in the dedicated partition of the phone can become corrupted. When this happens this this will usually cause certain issues to occur on the phone. To eliminate the possibility that this is what’s causing the problem you will have to wipe the cache partition of the phone from the recovery mode.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the Android logo displays, release all three keys.
  • An ‘Installing system update’ message will show for 30 – 60 seconds before the Android system recovery menu options appear.
  • Press the Volume down key several times to highlight wipe cache partition.
  • Press Power key to select.
  • Press the Volume down key to highlight yes, them and press the Power key to select.
  • When the wipe cache partition is complete, Reboot system now is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

Check if the issue still occurs.

Perform a factory reset

In case the above steps fails to fix the problem then chances are this could be caused by a software glitch. The best way to deal with this right now is to perform a factory reset. Take note that this will erase your phone data.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  • Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  • Press Power button to select.
  • Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  • Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  • When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

Do not install any apps in your phone after the reset. Check first if the issue still occur. If it does then this is most likely caused by a faulty hardware component already. The best thing you can do right now is to bring the phone to a service center and have it checked.
