How To Fix Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Random No Network Connection Error After Software Update

This is the latest model in the Note series of devices released last year which sports a large 6.4 inch Super AMOLED display, a Snapdragon 845 processor combined with 8GB of RAM, and a dual 12MP rear camera system. Although this is a solid performing device there are instances when certain issues can occur which we will be addressing today. In this latest installment of our troubleshooting series we will tackle the Galaxy Note 9 random no network connection error after software update issue.

How To Fix Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Random No Network Connection Error After Software Update

Problem: My phone, since updating to OS 8.1, has issues with it’s Bluetooth connection to vehicles.  It connects fine, shows battery strength, etc, but after a few seconds shows Zero Bars of cellular coverage.  If I try to make a call using the Car’s handsfree system I’m told “No Network Connection” – yet the phone itself actually has and shows full cellular coverage.  I can still receive calls or make calls by using the phone itself but physically touching the phone while driving is illegal in my jurisdiction. My phone is a Note 9 and the issue happens no matter which vehicle of numerous vehicles I connect to via Bluetooth.  A search on the web shows others having this problem with different makes and models of phones since updating the OS but I haven’t found a solution.

Solution: Before performing any troubleshooting steps on this phone it’s best to make sure that it is running on the latest software version. If an update is available then I suggest that you download and install it first.

Since this issue is most likely caused by a software glitch we will be checking if this is what’s really causing the problem by performing the troubleshooting steps listed below.

Perform a soft reset

A soft reset is usually performed when the phone is unresponsive however will also work in this case as it will refresh the phone software. This action usually fixes minor software glitches which could cause issues on the phone.

  • Press and hold the volume down button and don’t release it.
  • Now press and hold the Power key while holding down the volume down button.
  • Keep both keys held down together for 10 seconds or more.

Once the phone boots up check if the issue still occurs.

Check if the issue occurs in Safe Mode

There are cases when an app you downloaded will cause issues on the phone when they are installed. To check if an app you downloaded is causing the problem you will have to start the phone in Safe Mode as only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run in this mode.

  • Turn the device off.
  • Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen appearing on the screen.
  • When SAMSUNG appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  • Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  • Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  • When Safe mode appears in the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume down key.

In case the issue does not occur in this mode then it is most likely caused by an app you installed. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Wipe the cache partition of the phone

There are cases when the cached data stored in the dedicated partition of the phone can become corrupted. When this happens this this will usually cause certain issues to occur on the phone. To eliminate the possibility that this is what’s causing the problem you will have to wipe the cache partition of the phone from the recovery mode.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the Android logo displays, release all three keys.
  • An ‘Installing system update’ message will show for 30 – 60 seconds before the Android system recovery menu options appear.
  • Press the Volume down key several times to highlight wipe cache partition.
  • Press Power key to select.
  • Press the Volume down key to highlight yes, them and press the Power key to select.
  • When the wipe cache partition is complete, Reboot system now is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

Check if the issue still occurs.

Perform a factory reset

In case the above steps fails to fix the problem then chances are this is caused by old software data that has not been completely removed during the update process. The best way to deal with this right now is to perform a factory reset. Make sure to backup your phone data before doing the reset.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  • Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  • Press Power button to select.
  • Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  • Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  • When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

If the issue still persists even after performing the steps listed above then you you might have to wait for another update patch to fix this problem as this is most likely caused by a bug in the current software version.
