How To Fix Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Pictures In Gallery Turn Grey

Problem: As stated, after I take pictures on my Note 9 the pictures remain fine for a few minutes then turn grey inside. The thumbnails are perfect but viewing them it is all grey. It is frustrating as when I take pictures using snapchat or WhatsApp everything is fine. My pictures are saved on the sd card. MicroUSB being so slow I could not even transfer pictures to my laptop because I kept getting errors. I went ahead and formatted my SD card and did a hard factory reset on my phone but in just 1 day the problem has started again. Few pictures are ok but this happens randomly. I was thinking it was a malware that was causing the issue but after a hard reset I feel like it should have been ok. If anyone could help me out that would be great!!

Solution: Before performing any troubleshooting steps on this device it’s best to make sure that it is running on the latest software version. If an update is available then I suggest that you download and install it first.

Since you mentioned that the photos are stored in the microSD card then it’s possible that the card is faulty and causing the pictures to become corrupted. What you should do first in this case is to remove the microSD card from the phone then try taking a couple of pictures. The photos taken will automatically be saved in the internal storage of the phone. Check if you can access these photos. If the photos can be accessed then it’s very likely that the card is causing the problem in which case I suggest that you replace this with a new one.

In case it is not the microSD card that is causing the problem then proceed with the additional troubleshooting steps listed below.

Perform a soft reset

The first troubleshooting step that you will need to do is a soft reset. This will refresh the phone software and usually fixes minor software glitches.

  • Press and hold the Power and Volume down key for up to 45 seconds.
  • Wait as the device restarts.

Once the phone starts try to check if the issue still occurs.

Check if the problem occurs in Safe Mode

There are instances when an app you downloaded on your phone can cause issues. To check if a third party app is causing this problem you will have to start the phone in Safe Mode as only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run in this mode.

  • Turn the device off.
  • Press and hold the Power key past the screen with the device name.
  • When ‘SAMSUNG’ appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  • Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  • Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  • Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  • Release the Volume down key when you see ‘Safe Mode’.

If the issue does not occur in this mode then the problem could be caused by one of the apps you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Wipe the cache partition of the phone

Your phone will store cached data of apps in a dedicated partition in its internal storage. This data helps apps open faster making for a better mobile experience. There are however instances when this cached data can become corrupted and can cause issues with the device. To check if this is what’s causing the problem you should wipe the cache partition of the phone.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the device logo screen displays, release only the Power key.
  • When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  • Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition’.
  • Press the Power key to select.
  • Press the Volume down key to highlight ‘yes’ and press the Power key to select.
  • When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

Check if the issue still occurs.

Perform a factory reset

One last troubleshooting step to consider if the above steps fails to fix the problem is a factory reset. This will revert the phone back to its original factory condition. Make sure to backup your phone data before doing this step.

  • Make sure that the phone is off.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the device logo screen displays, release only the Power key
  • When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  • Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  • Press Power button to select.
  • Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  • Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  • When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.
  • Once the phone has fully started do not install any apps in your phone yet. Try to check first if the screen problem still occurs
