How To Fix Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Not Receiving Group Messages

Problem: Hello! Hoping you can help me. I have a Galaxy note 9 from Verizon. I use the message plus app for messaging. I had a group text with myself and 3 others that all had iPhones. The group text thread has been going for weeks with no issue until today. All of a sudden I’m not receiving any messages sent in that thread. I can receive messages from anyone else, no issue. But getting messages in that group thread is working at all. We tried deleting it, making a new group, nothing has fixed it. In fact, it seems that as of this morning I’m not able to receive any group messages! Please help!

Solution: Before performing any troubleshooting steps on this phone its best to make sure that it is running on the latest software version first. If an update is available then I suggest that you download and install it first.

You should also make sure that you have an active mobile data subscription and that the phone is getting a strong mobile data signal from the network.

The problem is most likely caused by a software glitch which is why we will be concentrating our troubleshooting efforts on the software side of the phone. Follow the troubleshooting steps listed below which are recommended for this particular issue.

Perform a soft reset

A soft reset is usually performed to refresh the phone software. This action usually fixes minor software glitches which could cause issues on the phone.

  • Press and hold the volume down button and don’t release it.
  • Now press and hold the Power key while holding down the volume down button.
  • Keep both keys held down together for 10 seconds or more.

Once the phone boots up check if the issue still occurs.

Clear the cache and data of the Message+ app

There are cases when the problem is caused by corrupt data within the messaging app. To eliminate this possibility you will have to clear the cache and data of the Message+ app.

  • From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  • Tap Settings > Apps.
  • Tap the desired application in the default list.
  • To display preinstalled apps, tap Menu > Show system apps.
  • Tap Storage > CLEAR CACHE > CLEAR DATA > DELETE

Try to check if the issue still occurs.

Make sure your phone has the correct APN settings

If your phone has an incorrect APN setting then it won’t be able to use the mobile data network. This will affect the sending and receiving of group messages as it uses a mobile data connection.

Listed below are the APN settings for the Verizon network.

  • APN Name: Verizon
  • APN: vzwinternet
  • Proxy:
  • Port:
  • Username:
  • Password:
  • Server:
  • MMSC: http://mms.vtext.com/servlets/mms
  • MMS Proxy:
  • MMS Port: 80
  • MCC: 310
  • MNC: 12
  • Authentication Type:
  • APN Type: internet+mms
  • APN Protocol:
  • APN Roaming Protocol:
  • Bearer:
  • MVNO Type:

Check if the issue occurs in Safe Mode

There are cases when an app you downloaded will cause issues on the phone when they are installed. To check if an app you downloaded is causing the problem you will have to start the phone in Safe Mode as only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run in this mode.

  • Turn the device off.
  • Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen appearing on the screen.
  • When SAMSUNG appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  • Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  • Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  • When Safe mode appears in the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume down key.

In case the issue does not occur in this mode then it is most likely caused by an app you installed. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Wipe the cache partition of the phone

There are cases when the cached data stored in the dedicated partition of the phone can become corrupted. When this happens this this will usually cause certain issues to occur on the phone. To eliminate the possibility that this is what’s causing the problem you will have to wipe the cache partition of the phone from the recovery mode.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the Android logo displays, release all three keys.
  • An ‘Installing system update’ message will show for 30 – 60 seconds before the Android system recovery menu options appear.
  • Press the Volume down key several times to highlight wipe cache partition.
  • Press Power key to select.
  • Press the Volume down key to highlight yes, them and press the Power key to select.
  • When the wipe cache partition is complete, Reboot system now is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

Check if the issue still occurs.

Perform a factory reset

In case the above steps fails to fix the problem then chances are this is caused by old software data that has not been completely removed during the update process. The best way to deal with this right now is to perform a factory reset. Make sure to backup your phone data before doing the reset. This reset will also fix the keyboard and LTE issues that you are experiencing with the device.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  • Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  • Press Power button to select.
  • Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  • Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  • When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

Once the phone starts make sure that the device has the correct APN settings then check if the issue still occurs.
