How To Fix Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Not Getting Emails

Problem: For the past 2 weeks, I have been having an issue were I cannot access all of the emails I receive. I have a Note 9. On some of my emails, I open it and the header loads but the body does not. The line keeps moving across the top like it is trying to load. I can usually work around this by forwarding the email to myself. My Mom has a Samsung tablet and is experiencing the same issue. We both use AOL as our email provider. I have performed all the standard troubleshooting fixes and uninstalled/reinstalled the Samsung email app. In the meantime, I have downloaded another email app and it fixed the issue. I also connected a Yahoo account to the Samsung email app and experienced the same issue so I know it is the Samsung app….not AOL. My AOL mail functions fine via the AOL website and I have no issues with it on my iPad or Windows laptop (both of which I use the built in email app for). My problem began right after the last update on Oct 24th. I have searched online to see if anyone else has experienced the same issue and I am not finding any other posts/complaints. I will keep the other mail app for the time being but would really prefer to go back to the simplicity of the Samsung email app.

Solution: Before troubleshooting this issue the first thing that you need to do is to make sure that your phone is running on the latest software version. If an update is available then make sure to download and install it in your phone.

Check your phone Internet connection

The first thing that you will need to do is to make sure that your phone has a strong Internet connection. Try accessing a website using your phone browser to check if you are able to go online. Sometimes, the problem could be caused by the router blocking access to certain services. To check if this is the case try connecting the phone to a different Wi-Fi network. You could also use your phone  mobile data subscription to see if you can get emails.

Check your email settings

If you are using an email app on the phone to access your email then you should make sure that the email settings are correct.

  • Slide your finger downwards starting from the top of the screen.
  • Tap the settings icon.
  • Tap Cloud and accounts.
  • Tap Accounts.
  • Tap on the Email account
  • Check the settings and make sure that they are correct.

Check if the problem occurs in Safe Mode

There are instances when an app you downloaded can cause this particular problem. To check if this is the case you will need to start the phone in Safe Mode since only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run in this mode.

  • Turn the device off.
  • Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen appearing on the screen.
  • When SAMSUNG appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  • Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  • Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  • When Safe mode appears in the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume down key.

In case you don’t experience the problem in this mode then it could most likely be caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Wipe the cache partition of the phone

There are instances when a corrupted cached data can cause this particular problem. To eliminate this possibility you will need to wipe the cache partition of the phone.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  • Press the Volume down key to highlight “wipe cache partition.”
  • Press the Power key to select.
  • Press the Volume down key to highlight “yes” and press the Power key to select.
  • When the wipe cache partition is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the phone.

Perform a factory reset using the hardware keys

One last troubleshooting step to consider is a factory reset. This will revert the phone back to its original factory condition. Make sure to backup your phone data before doing this as it will be deleted in the process.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  • Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  • Press Power button to select.
  • Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  • Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  • When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the phone.

If the problem still persists after the reset then this might be caused by incompatibility issues between the stock Samsung email app and the AOL email account. This will most likely be fixed in a future update to the app.
