How To Fix Samsung Galaxy J7 Only Charges When Off

Problem: Hi I have a metroPCS j7 and my phone will only charge when it is off and it’s slow charging at that I’ve tried everything I factory reset my phone I bought a new battery I’ve replaced my charging cord and block I’ve watch all kinds of videos and I cleared the cache I clean the charging port out I just dont I got and app to check to make sure battery was ok and it is and it’s getting 3.6 v from wall charger which I think is in the normal range so idk what else to try.

Solution: Before performing any troubleshooting steps on this device it’s best to make sure that it is running on the latest software version. If an update is available then I suggest that you download and install it first.

Listed below are the recommended troubleshooting steps that you need to perform for this particular problem

Clean the charging port of the phone

There are instances when dirt and debris can accumulate in the charging port of the phone which can cause charging problems. To make sure that the charging port is clean you should clean it using a can of compressed air.

Try using a different charging cord and wall charger

To eliminate the possibility of the problem being caused by a faulty charger you should try using a different charging cord and wall charger.

Perform a soft reset

Try refreshing the phone software by doing a soft reset. This will usually resolve issue caused by minor software glitches.

  • Press and hold the Power and Volume down key for up to 45 seconds.
  • Wait as the device restarts.

Check if the issue still occurs.

Check if the issue occurs in Safe Mode

There are instances when an app you downloaded can cause this particular issue. To check if this is the case you will have to start the phone in Safe Mode as only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run in this mode.

  • Turn the device off.
  • Press and hold the Power key past the screen with the device name.
  • When ‘SAMSUNG’ appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  • Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  • Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  • Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  • Release the Volume down key when you see ‘Safe Mode’.

If the issue does not occur in this mode then it could be caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Wipe the cache partition

There are instances when a corrupted system cached data can cause this problem. It’s therefore a good idea to delete this data as the phone will just rebuild this data when it starts again.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the device logo screen displays, release only the Power key
  • When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  • Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  • Press the Power key to select.
  • Press the Volume down key to highlight ‘yes’ and press the Power key to select.
  • When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

Check if the issue still occurs.

Perform a factory reset

One last troubleshooting step to consider is a factory reset. This will bring your phone back to its original factory condition. Take note that your phone data will be deleted in the process so make sure to create a backup copy before proceeding.

  • Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  • Press Power button to select.
  • Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  • Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  • When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.
  • With no apps installed in the phone, try to check if the issue still occurs.

If the above steps doesn’t fix the problem then you will need to bring the phone to a service center and have it checked as this could already be caused by a faulty hardware component.
