How To Fix Samsung Galaxy A6 Apps Randomly Opening

Problem: I have a Samsung Galaxy A6 with Android 8.0. I am having issues with apps randomly popping up, or switching through, or flipping while I’m using my phone–I’m not sure how to best describe this. For example, if I’m scrolling through Facebook (or using any app), the phone will buzz as though I used the recent button, and then automatically flip to a recent app. It can flip through 5 or 6 times before stopping at a specific app. When I try to use the app on the screen, the process will start over. It’s gotten so that I can’t even read a text message before it flips to a new app. I’ve tried restarting it, but it has no impact. I’ve removed the case, and that has no impact. It doesn’t seem to matter what apps I’m using. I can’t identify a pattern or figure out the cause of it. There are no error codes and everything else seems to be functioning just fine. It’s as though there’s a little ghost that just likes to push the  Button over and over. (And over and over.) Please help?

Solution: The first thing that you will want to do in this particular case is to make sure that the phone is running on the latest software version. If an update is available then I suggest that you download and install it first.

This problem is most likely caused by a software glitch which is why we will be concentrating our troubleshooting efforts on the software of the device.

Perform a soft reset

The first thing you will need to do is to reboot the device. This will refresh the phone software and will usually fix this type of problem.

  • Hold the Power button for 3-5 seconds.
  • Tap Power off.
  • When the device has shut down completely, wait approximately one minute. This will help make sure that the cache and temporary files are wiped from the device.
  • Press and hold the Power button to switch it back on.

Check if the apps randomly open.

Check if the problem occurs in Safe Mode

The next thing to do is to check if an app you downloaded is causing the problem.. This can be done by starting the phone in Safe Mode as only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run in this mode.

  • Turn the device off.
  • Press and hold the Power key past the screen with the device name.
  • When ‘SAMSUNG’ appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  • Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  • Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  • Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  • Release the Volume down key when you see ‘Safe Mode’.

If your apps do not randomly open in this mode then the problem could be caused by one of the apps you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Wipe the cache partition of the phone

Your device will store cached data of apps in a dedicated partition in its internal storage. This data helps apps open faster making for a better mobile experience. There are however instances when this cached data can become corrupted and can cause issues with the device. To check if this is what’s causing the problem you should wipe the cache partition of the phone.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the device logo screen displays, release only the Power key.
  • When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  • Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition’.
  • Press the Power key to select.
  • Press the Volume down key to highlight ‘yes’ and press the Power key to select.
  • When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

Perform a factory reset

The last troubleshooting step you will have to do if the above steps fails to fix the problem is a factory reset. This will revert the phone back to its original factory condition. Make sure to backup your phone data before doing this step.

  • Make sure that the phone is off.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the device logo screen displays, release only the Power key
  • When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  • Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  • Press Power button to select.
  • Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  • Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  • When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

Once the reset is complete do not install any apps in your phone yet. Try to check first if the issue still occurs.

If the above steps fails to fix the problem then this is most likely caused by a faulty hardware component. You will need to bring the phone to a service center and have it checked if this is the case.
