How to Fix Nintendo Switch Joy-Con Not Charging
Joy-Con controllers that won’t charge when attached to the Nintendo Switch are usually caused by dirty contacts or software glitches. These steps will help get them charging again.
Method 1: Clean the Rail Contacts
- Detach the Joy-Con from the Switch.
- Use a dry, soft cloth or cotton swab to clean the metal contacts on the Joy-Con rail.
- Also clean the rail contacts on the Switch console itself.
- Use a small amount of isopropyl alcohol on stubborn dirt.
- Reattach the Joy-Con and check if it charges.
Method 2: Reset the Joy-Con
- Detach the Joy-Con from the Switch.
- Find the small SYNC button on the Joy-Con (near the SL/SR buttons).
- Press the SYNC button once.
- Reattach the Joy-Con to the console.
- Check if the charging indicator appears.
Method 3: Update Joy-Con Firmware
- Attach the Joy-Con to the Switch.
- Go to System Settings > Controllers and Sensors.
- Select Update Controllers.
- Wait for the update to complete.
- Detach and reattach the Joy-Con to test charging.
Method 4: Try a Different Charging Method
- If charging on the console doesn’t work, try a Joy-Con Charging Grip.
- Connect the Charging Grip to the Switch dock via USB.
- Attach the Joy-Con to the grip.
- If it charges this way, the console rail may be damaged.
- You can also use third-party Joy-Con charging docks.
Method 5: Contact Nintendo Support

- Visit Nintendo Support online and set up a repair request.
- Nintendo offers free Joy-Con repairs in many regions.
- You can also purchase a replacement battery kit for DIY repair.
