How to Fix Nintendo Switch Joy-Con Not Charging

Joy-Con controllers that won’t charge when attached to the Nintendo Switch are usually caused by dirty contacts or software glitches. These steps will help get them charging again.

Method 1: Clean the Rail Contacts

  1. Detach the Joy-Con from the Switch.
  2. Use a dry, soft cloth or cotton swab to clean the metal contacts on the Joy-Con rail.
  3. Also clean the rail contacts on the Switch console itself.
  4. Use a small amount of isopropyl alcohol on stubborn dirt.
  5. Reattach the Joy-Con and check if it charges.

Method 2: Reset the Joy-Con

  1. Detach the Joy-Con from the Switch.
  2. Find the small SYNC button on the Joy-Con (near the SL/SR buttons).
  3. Press the SYNC button once.
  4. Reattach the Joy-Con to the console.
  5. Check if the charging indicator appears.

Method 3: Update Joy-Con Firmware

  1. Attach the Joy-Con to the Switch.
  2. Go to System Settings > Controllers and Sensors.
  3. Select Update Controllers.
  4. Wait for the update to complete.
  5. Detach and reattach the Joy-Con to test charging.

Method 4: Try a Different Charging Method

  1. If charging on the console doesn’t work, try a Joy-Con Charging Grip.
  2. Connect the Charging Grip to the Switch dock via USB.
  3. Attach the Joy-Con to the grip.
  4. If it charges this way, the console rail may be damaged.
  5. You can also use third-party Joy-Con charging docks.

Method 5: Contact Nintendo Support

  1. If none of the above fixes work, the Joy-Con battery or rail connector may be faulty.
  2. Visit Nintendo Support online and set up a repair request.
  3. Nintendo offers free Joy-Con repairs in many regions.
  4. You can also purchase a replacement battery kit for DIY repair.
