Although this is a solid performing device there are instances when certain issues can occur which we will be addressing today. Make sure that your phone is running on the latest software version before doing the troubleshooting steps listed below. If an update is available then I suggest that you download and install it first. This will minimize the possibility of the problem being caused by an outdated software version.

Verify that your area has a good network signal

One factor that can cause this problem is if the phone is not getting a network signal. To verify if this is a coverage related issue you should check if your phone has a strong network signal. You should also check if other devices under the same network are also having the same problem in your immediate vicinity.

Do a soft reset

You should try refreshing the phone software as this will usually fix most of the common issues that you are experiencing with the device. Doing a soft reset will also reset the phone connection to the network which can fix this problem.

  • Press and hold the Power button for about 10 seconds, until the screen goes dark.
  • Wait for the device to restart.

Check your SIM card

This  problem can also be caused by an issue with the phone SIM card. If this is a SIM card related problem then you can fix this by turning off the phone and removing the SIM card. Wait for a few minutes before reinserting the SIM card back then turn on the phone. Check if the issue still occurs.

You should also try using a different SIM card in your phone to eliminate the possibility of the problem being caused by a defective SIM card.

Clear the cache and data of the messaging app

  • Swipe up on the Home screen to view your apps.
  • Tap Settings > Apps & Notifications > See all apps.
  • Tap the Messaging app, then tap Storage.
  • Tap Clear Cache or Clear Storage.

Check if the issue occurs in Safe Mode

There’s a possibility that an app you downloaded from  Google Play Store is causing this problem. This can be because of bugs in the app or compatibility issues between the app and your phone. To check if an app you downloaded is causing the problem you will have to start the phone in Safe Mode as only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run in this mode.

  • Press and hold the Power button until the ‘Power off’ option appears on the screen then release.
  • Touch and hold ‘Power off’ until ‘Reboot to safe mode’ screen appears.
  • From the ‘Reboot to safe mode’ prompt, tap OK to confirm.

If the problem does not occur in this mode then it could be caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Reset the phone network settings

Sometimes a wrong network settings can prevent the phone from sending and receiving a text message. To make sure that your phone is using the correct network settings you should try to reset this.

Take note that the following will apply when you do the reset.

  • Stored Wi-Fi networks are deleted.
  • Stored tethered connections are deleted.
  • Paired Bluetooth devices are deleted.
  • Background data sync settings are turned on.
  • Data restrictive settings in applications that were manually turned on/off are reset to the default setting.
  • Network selection mode is set to automatic.
  • Preferred mobile network type is set to best.

To perform the reset

  • Swipe up on the Home screen to view your apps, then tap Settings.
  • Tap System > Advanced > Reset options.
  • Tap Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth > RESET SETTINGS.
  • If prompted, enter your PIN or Password, then tap RESET SETTINGS

Wipe the cache partition of the phone

Sometimes this issue can be caused by a corrupted cached data. To eliminate the possibility that this is what’s causing the problem you will have to wipe the cache partition of the phone from the recovery mode.

  • With the phone powered off, press and hold the Volume down key and Power key for 2-3 seconds until the theBoot options screen appears.
  • Release the keys.
  • Use the Volume down key to scroll to highlight Recovery.
  • Press the Volume up key to select.
  • The phone will display the Motorola logo then the Android recovery screen.
  • Once the Android recovery screen displays, press and hold the Volume up key for 10-15 seconds.
  • Quickly tap and release the Power key.
  • The Android recovery screen will appear.
  • Scroll down using the Volume down key to highlight wipe cache partition.
  • Use the Power key to select.

Perform a factory reset

In case the above steps fails to fix the problem then one final troubleshooting step to consider is a factory reset. Make sure to backup your phone data before doing the reset.

  • Backup data on the internal memory.
  • Power off your device.
  • Press and hold the Power button and the Volume down button.
  • When the phone turns on, release the Power button but continue to hold the Volume down button until you see the Recovery screen.
  • Use the Volume Keys to scroll to RECOVERY MODE, then press the Power button.
  • When you see the Android with the exclamation point, hold the Power button and press Volume up. Then release both buttons.
  • Use the Volume Keys to scroll to Wipe data/factory reset, then press the Power button.
  • Use the Volume Keys to scroll to Yes, then press the Power button.
  • Use the Volume Keys to scroll to Userdata + personalized content, then press the Power button
  • Wait until the device finishes formatting and brings you back to the menu.
  • Use the Volume Keys to scroll to Reboot system now, then press the Power button.

If the issue still persists even after performing the steps listed above then this might already be caused by a faulty hardware component, especially if it is not getting any network signal. The best thing to do right now is to bring the phone to a service center and have it checked.
