How To Fix LG V40 ThinQ Emergency Calls Only Error

Problem: Error message (Emergency calls only) appears anytime I try to make a phone call. This problem started a month ago. I have done soft and hard reboots. I have done the “factory reset” at least twice. I change my service provider to T-Mobile, who installed the new sim card. I made a phone call and everything (the phone and Internet) seem to be ok. A couple of hours later my phone and Internet stopped working again, displaying the same error message. The next day I took the phone to another T-Mobile place and they opened the SIM tray to check the sim card. Then, the girl put it back  in, checked the setting and it started working again. No settings were changed, she said. Five minutes later the phone stopped working again. As suggested, I removed the sim card and put a piece of tape on the back, but it didn’t work either. Please help.

Solution: Before performing any troubleshooting steps on this phone it’s best to make sure that it is running on the latest software version. If an update is available then I suggest that you download and install it first.

Perform a Soft Reset

The first thing you will need to do is to refresh the phone software by doing a soft reset. This step will usually fix most minor software glitches. The soft reset is done by pressing and holding the Power button and Volume Down until the device powers off, approximately 8 seconds, then release.

Try using a different SIM card in your phone

The next step is to check if the problem is caused by a faulty SIM card. You should try using a new SIM card in your phone then check if the issue still occurs.

Check if the problem occurs in Safe Mode

There are cases when the problem can be caused by an app that you recently downloaded You can check if this is what’s causing the problem by starting the phone in Safe Mode as only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run in this mode.

  • With the screen on, press and hold the Power key.
  • In the options menu that displays, press and hold Power off.
  • When prompted to restart in Safe Mode, tap OK.
  • After your device restarts, it displays Safe mode at the bottom of the screen.

If the issue does not occur in this mode then the problem could be  caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Wipe the cache partition

Your phone will store temporary data in a dedicated partition in its storage space which helps the device run apps smoothly. If this data gets corrupted then issues can occur on the device. To make sure that this is not what’s causing the problem you will have to clear the cache partition of the phone.

  • From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  • Tap the ‘General’ tab.
  • Tap Storage > Internal storage.
  • Wait for menu options to finish calculating.
  • Tap Free up space.
  • Tap Temporary files & raw files.
  • Select the following options: Cached data, Clip tray temporary files, Raw files from camera
  • Tap Delete > DELETE.

Check if the issue still occurs.

Perform a factory reset

One last troubleshooting step you can perform if the above steps fails to fix the problem is a factory reset. Take note that this will erase your phone data so it’s best to backup the phone data before proceeding.

  • Back up data on the internal memory before performing a factory reset.
  • From the Home screen, Settings.
  • Tap the ‘General’ tab.
  • Tap Restart & reset.
  • Tap Factory data reset.
  • If desired, tap the Erase SD card checkbox.
  • Tap RESET PHONE – Delete all – RESET

You can also perform the factory reset using the hardware keys.

  • Backup all data on the internal memory before performing a master reset.
  • Turn off the device.
  • Press and hold the Power and Volume down buttons.
  • When the LG logo appears, quickly release and then re-hold the Power button while continuing to hold the Volume down button.
  • When the ‘Delete all user data (including LG and carrier apps) and reset all settings’ message appears, use the Volume down button to highlight Yes.
  • Press the Power button to reset the device

Once the reset is complete do not install any apps in your phone just yet. Try to check first if the issue still occurs.

In case the issue still persists even after performing the steps listed above then this could already be caused by  faulty hardware component. The best thing to do right now is to bring the phone to a service center and have it checked.
