How to fix iPhone 7 camera not working or blurry photos

A malfunctioning camera on your iPhone 7 can range from blurry shots to a completely non-responsive app. Most issues are software-related and fixable without opening the device. Use these steps to diagnose and restore camera functionality.

Method 1: Clean the Camera Lens

Blurry photos are often simply a dirty lens. The iPhone 7’s rear and front cameras are exposed to fingerprints, dust, and pocket debris.

  • Turn off the iPhone.
  • Use a clean microfiber cloth to gently wipe the lens glass in circular motions.
  • For stubborn smudges, slightly dampen the cloth with distilled water (do not spray directly on the phone).
  • Check both front and rear cameras if either underperforms.

After cleaning, test the camera in good lighting. If blurriness persists, continue.

Method 2: Restart the iPhone

A soft reboot clears temporary memory leaks and app glitches that may interfere with camera processing.

  1. Hold the Sleep/Wake button until the power slider appears.
  2. Slide to power off; wait 30 seconds.
  3. Press the Sleep/Wake button again to turn the phone back on.
  4. Open the Camera app and test.

Method 3: Close Background Apps and Free Storage

Low storage can cause camera failures, especially when saving photos. Excessive background apps may also compete for resources.

  • Check storage: Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Ensure at least 500 MB free.
  • Delete unnecessary apps, photos, or videos.
  • Double-click the Home button to show app switcher, then swipe up on all apps to close them.

Freeing resources often resolves camera crashes.

Method 4: Update iOS

Outdated iOS can contain bugs affecting camera hardware communication.

  • Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
  • Install any available updates.
  • After updating, restart the iPhone and test the camera.

Method 5: Reset All Settings

If the camera still misbehaves, a settings reset can correct corrupted configuration without erasing data.

Note: This removes Wi-Fi passwords, Bluetooth pairings, and system preferences but keeps your photos and apps intact.

  1. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset.
  2. Choose Reset All Settings.
  3. Enter passcode and confirm.
  4. Wait for the iPhone to restart; then test the camera.

Method 6: Test for Hardware Damage

If the camera app does not open at all, the image is extremely blurry despite cleaning, or you notice physical damage (e.g., lens misalignment, water exposure), the hardware may be at fault:

  • Dropped impacts can misalign the lens or damage the image sensor.
  • Water exposure can cause internal corrosion.
  • A failing rear camera module often needs replacement.

Visit an Apple Store or authorized repair service for diagnostics. For an iPhone 7, weigh repair cost against the phone’s current value.

Most camera issues on iPhone 7 are software-based. Work through the steps above before considering hardware repair.
