How to Fix iPhone 17 Pro Camera Black Screen Freeze
Several iPhone 17 Pro users report that their camera app freezes, shows a black screen, or crashes unexpectedly. These fixes address the software-related causes of camera malfunctions.
Fix #1: Force Close the Camera App
The iPhone 17 Pro camera app can freeze or show a black screen if its process gets stuck. Force closing and reopening it usually resolves it.
- Swipe up from the bottom and pause to open the App Switcher.
- Find the Camera app and swipe up on it to close it.
- Reopen the Camera app.
Fix #2: Force Restart
A force restart clears the camera hardware driver state and can fix freezes, black screens, and crashes.
- Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
- Press and quickly release the Volume Down button.
- Press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.
Fix #3: Check for iOS Updates
Camera bugs are frequently fixed in iOS point releases.
- Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
- Install any available update.
Fix #4: Clean the Camera Lens
Smudges, dust, or debris on the lens can cause blurry photos, spots, or autofocus issues. Use a microfiber cloth to gently clean all camera lenses.
Fix #5: Reset All Settings
If the camera started misbehaving after an update, a settings reset can fix configuration conflicts.
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Tap Reset > Reset All Settings.
Fix #6: Test in Safe Mode
Third-party apps with camera access can interfere with the native camera. Restart the phone and immediately test the camera before opening any other apps to see if the issue persists.
Fix #7: Contact Apple Support
If the camera still shows a black screen, freezes, or crashes after a factory reset, there may be a hardware fault with the camera module. Schedule a Genius Bar appointment.
