How to Fix iPhone 16 Safari Not Working After iOS 26.1 Update

If Safari stopped loading pages, keeps freezing, or closes unexpectedly on your iPhone 16 after iOS 26.1, the problem is usually tied to network settings, bad website data, or an extension conflict triggered by the update. Fix #1: Force close Safari and restart your iPhone

This clears a stuck browser process that can appear right after an iOS update.

  1. Swipe up from the bottom and pause to open the App Switcher.
  2. Swipe up on Safari to close it.
  3. Press and hold the Side button and either volume button.
  4. Slide to power off, then turn the iPhone back on.
  5. Open Safari and test several websites.

Fix #2: Clear Safari history and website data

Corrupted cached website files can stop pages from loading correctly.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps > Safari.
  3. Tap Clear History and Website Data.
  4. Confirm the action.
  5. Try Safari again.

Fix #3: Disable Safari extensions and content blockers

Some extensions break after iOS updates and prevent Safari from loading pages.

  1. Go to Settings > Apps > Safari > Extensions.
  2. Turn off all installed extensions.
  3. Return to Safari settings.
  4. Disable any content blockers if enabled.
  5. Reopen Safari and test browsing.

Fix #4: Check Wi-Fi, cellular data, and Private Relay settings

If the browser cannot reach websites, the problem may be the connection rather than Safari itself.

  1. Try loading the same site on both Wi-Fi and cellular data.
  2. Toggle Airplane Mode on for 10 seconds, then off.
  3. If you use iCloud Private Relay, go to Settings > Apple Account > iCloud > Private Relay.
  4. Turn Private Relay off temporarily.
  5. Test Safari again.

Fix #5: Turn off Screen Time web restrictions

After some updates, content restrictions can block browsing unexpectedly.

  1. Open Settings > Screen Time.
  2. Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions.
  3. Open App Store, Media, Web, & Games or the web content section.
  4. Make sure unrestricted web access is allowed if appropriate.
  5. Test Safari again.

Fix #6: Reset network settings

This removes broken Wi-Fi, DNS, VPN, and cellular network settings that can stop Safari from loading pages.

  1. Open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset.
  2. Tap Reset Network Settings.
  3. Enter your passcode if asked.
  4. Let the iPhone restart.
  5. Reconnect to Wi-Fi and test Safari again.

Fix #7: Install the next iOS patch or use a full reset if needed

If Safari broke because of an iOS 26.1 bug, the permanent fix may arrive in the next patch.

  1. Open Settings > General > Software Update.
  2. Install any available update.
  3. If no update is available, back up the iPhone.
  4. Try Reset All Settings.
  5. Use Erase All Content and Settings only if Safari still does not work after backup.
