Fix #1: Force close Mail and reopen it
Mail may be frozen after the update and fail to refresh messages or load the inbox.
- Swipe up from the bottom and pause to open the App Switcher.
- Swipe the Mail app away.
- Open Mail again and pull down to refresh.
Fix #2: Make sure Mail can use cellular data and Background App Refresh
If those settings are off, Mail may appear broken when it is only blocked from syncing.
- Open Settings > Cellular and make sure Mail is enabled.
- Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh.
- Turn on refresh for Mail.
Fix #3: Recheck the affected account credentials
iOS updates often expose old authentication issues with Exchange, Gmail, and Outlook accounts.
- Go to Settings > Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts.
- Open the affected account.
- Re-enter the password if the account shows an error.
Fix #4: Disable and re-enable Mail sync for the account
Refreshing the connection can fix a stuck inbox without deleting the account.
- Open the affected account in Mail Accounts.
- Turn off Mail.
- Wait a few seconds, then turn it back on.
Fix #5: Delete and add the account again
If the local Mail database was corrupted during the update, re-adding the account is often the fastest fix.
- Delete the affected account from Mail Accounts.
- Restart the iPhone.
- Add the account again and wait for it to resync.
Fix #6: Reset network settings if Mail fails on Wi-Fi and cellular
Mail sync can break when DNS, VPN, or network profiles were corrupted by the update.
- Open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset.
- Tap Reset Network Settings.
- Reconnect and test Mail again.
Fix #7: Install the next iOS patch and test webmail
This helps confirm whether the issue is local to the phone or with the email provider.
- Open Settings > General > Software Update and install any newer build.
- Then sign in to the same mailbox through Safari.
- If webmail works but Mail does not, the issue is on the iPhone rather than the provider.
