Fix #1: Close Camera and restart the iPhone

This resets the camera process and often restores normal autofocus immediately.

  1. Open the App Switcher.
  2. Swipe up on Camera to close it.
  3. Turn the iPhone 16 off.
  4. Turn it back on after a few seconds.
  5. Open Camera and test focus again.

Fix #2: Clean the lens and remove the case or lens protector

Focus problems are often caused by an obstructed lens or an accessory sitting too close to it.

  1. Use a clean microfiber cloth to wipe the camera lens.
  2. Remove any lens cover or dirty case.
  3. Check for fingerprints, dust, or smudges.
  4. Open Camera in good lighting.
  5. Tap on a subject and see if focus locks properly.

Fix #3: Switch between camera modes and zoom levels

This can reset the focus system if one camera mode got stuck after the update.

  1. Open Camera.
  2. Switch between Photo, Portrait, and Video.
  3. Try different zoom levels.
  4. Tap on objects at different distances.
  5. Check whether focus returns in one or more modes.

Fix #4: Turn off Macro Control or lens-related helpers temporarily

Auto lens switching and close-up controls can sometimes make focus behavior seem broken.

  1. Open Settings > Camera.
  2. Review settings such as Macro Control if available on your model.
  3. Turn the feature off temporarily.
  4. Return to Camera and test normal shooting.
  5. Re-enable it later if the issue is resolved.

Fix #5: Reset all settings

This removes broken camera preferences without erasing your photos or apps.

  1. Open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset.
  2. Tap Reset All Settings.
  3. Enter your passcode.
  4. Let the iPhone restart.
  5. Test the camera focus again.

Fix #6: Check for a newer iOS update

If iOS 26.1 introduced the focusing bug, Apple may already have released a patch.

  1. Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
  2. Install any available update.
  3. Restart the iPhone after updating.
  4. Open Camera.
  5. Check whether autofocus now works normally.

Fix #7: Test with third-party camera apps or contact Apple Support

If every app shows the same focusing problem, the camera hardware may need service.

  1. Install a trusted third-party camera app.
  2. Test whether it can focus properly.
  3. If the issue appears everywhere, back up the iPhone.
  4. Run Apple diagnostics if available.
  5. Book service with Apple if the lens still will not focus.
