How to fix iPhone 14 stuck in recovery mode
If your iPhone 14 is stuck in recovery mode, you can often exit and restore normal operation.
Method 1: Exit Recovery Mode Without Restore
Sometimes the iPhone just needs to be restarted out of recovery.
- Disconnect the USB cable.
- Force restart: Press and quickly release Volume Up, then Volume Down, then press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo.
- The phone should boot normally if no underlying corruption exists.
If it re-enters recovery automatically, proceed to restore.
Method 2: Update via Recovery Mode
If the system files are corrupted but hardware is fine, an Update may fix it without erasing data.
- Connect to iTunes/Finder; in recovery mode, choose Update (not Restore).
- iTunes will download and install iOS without wiping data.
- After updating, the phone should boot.
Method 3: Restore via Recovery Mode
If Update fails or you don’t mind erasing data, do a full Restore.
- In recovery mode (cable pointing to iTunes), click Restore.
- Confirm; iTunes/Finder will download iOS and reinstall.
- After restore completes, the iPhone will be like new. Restore from a backup if needed.
Method 4: Try DFU Mode
If recovery mode itself is corrupted, DFU can force a restore at a lower level.
- Put the iPhone into DFU mode (see boot loop article for steps).
- iTunes/Finder will detect the device in recovery and prompt Restore.
- Perform the restore.
Method 5: Use Alternative Computer or Cable
Sometimes a bad cable or USB port prevents proper communication.
- Try a different Apple-certified Lightning cable.
- Use another computer (PC or Mac) with latest iTunes/Finder.
- Ensure the computer has an internet connection to download iOS firmware.
Method 6: Check for Hardware Issues
If the iPhone repeatedly fails to exit recovery even after multiple restore attempts, there could be hardware problems:
- NAND storage failure
- Logic board errors
- Internal connection issues
Professional diagnostics are recommended.
A stuck recovery mode is almost always fixable with an Update or Restore, provided the hardware is sound.
