How to fix iPhone 14 Apple Pay not working at terminal

If Apple Pay is not working at terminals with your iPhone 14, try these solutions.

Method 1: Verify Card Availability

Open Wallet app and ensure your card is present and not disabled.

  • Tap the card to see its details; ensure it’s not expired or deactivated.
  • Also check that you’ve added a supported card (Visa, MasterCard, Amex, etc.) from a participating bank.

Method 2: Check Apple Pay Service Status

Sometimes Apple’s servers have temporary outages.

  • Visit Apple’s System Status page (www.apple.com/support/systemstatus/) and verify Apple Pay is operational.

Method 3: Ensure Correct Default Card

If you have multiple cards, the wrong one may be set as default.

  • In Wallet, tap the card you want as default.
  • Then double-click the Side button (or use automatic selection at terminal) to bring up the default card.

Method 4: Clean the NFC Antenna Area

The NFC antenna is near the top/rear of the device; a case or dirt can block it.

  • Remove thick cases or metal covers that might interfere.
  • Wipe the top edge of the iPhone with a dry cloth.

Method 5: Restart the iPhone

A reboot can refresh the Secure Element and NFC controller.

Method 6: Update iOS

Apple Pay issues are sometimes fixed in updates.

  • Settings > General > Software Update > install latest iOS.

Method 7: Re-add the Card

If the card’s token is corrupted, remove and add it again.

  1. Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay > select the card > Remove.
  2. In Wallet app, tap Add to re-add the card (you’ll need to verify with your bank).

Method 8: Reset All Settings

As a last resort before contacting support, reset settings (doesn’t delete data).

  1. Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings.
  2. Reboot; re-add card.

Method 9: Contact Bank or Apple Support

If Apple Pay still fails:

  • Your bank may have blocked the card for Apple Pay or there’s an authorization issue.
  • Also contact Apple Support for potential hardware problems with the NFC chip.

Apple Pay failures are often software or setup issues; re-adding the card or resetting settings usually resolves it.
