How to fix iPhone 13 microphone not working during calls

If the microphone on your iPhone 13 is not working during phone calls, follow these troubleshooting steps.

Method 1: Check Mute and Audio Route

  • Ensure the phone is not muted (silent switch).
  • During a call, verify the microphone is not muted (the icon should not be crossed).
  • If you see a “Bluetooth” label, audio may be routed to a headset; tap the speakerphone icon to switch to built-in mic.

Method 2: Clean the Microphone Holes

Dirt or debris can block sound entry.

  • Gently clean the microphone openings with a soft brush or compressed air.
  • Primary mic is at the bottom left; secondary mic is near the earpiece.

Method 3: Restart the iPhone

A soft reboot can clear temporary audio routing glitches.

Hold Side and Volume buttons; slide to power off; wait; turn back on.

Method 4: Remove Cases and Screen Protectors

Some cases cover the microphone openings. Remove the case and test a call to see if that resolves it.

Method 5: Update iOS

Software bugs can affect microphone permissions.

  • Go to Settings > General > Software Update and install any available updates.

Method 6: Check Microphone Permissions

Apps need explicit microphone access. While this is less relevant for Phone app, some call apps (e.g., Skype, WhatsApp) require permissions.

  • Settings > Privacy & Microphone: ensure relevant apps are allowed.

Method 7: Reset All Settings

If the audio settings are corrupted, reset all settings (does not erase data).

  1. Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings.
  2. Wait for reboot; test calls.

Method 8: Hardware Diagnosis

If the microphone remains non-functional:

  • It could be physically damaged (water, drop).
  • The microphone component or audio IC may need replacement.

Contact Apple Support or an authorized repair shop. For iPhone 13, consider repair cost vs device value.

Most microphone problems are software or blockage issues; clean and reset before assuming hardware failure.
