Although this is a solid performing device there are instances when certain issues can occur which we will be addressing today. In this latest installment of our troubleshooting series we will tackle the Pixel 3 not getting text message notifications issue.

How To Fix Google Pixel 3 Not Getting Text Message Notifications
Problem: I am not receiving text notifications sometimes. I haven’t been able to set a pattern. If person A texts I may or may not receive a notification, either visual or audible. But then if person B texts I receive notification. If I responded to person A I then get all notifications then on for that conversation. It’s not always the same person. And it’s not all the time. Some days I receive all notifications. It usually is my son’s father that I don’t get notifications, but it has been other people too. I don’t have him muted and I don’t have any do not disturb settings on.
Solution: Before performing any troubleshooting steps on this phone it’s best to make sure that it is running on the latest software version. If an update is available then I suggest that you download and install it first.
For this particular issue you should first check the text notification setting of the phone and make sure that it is correctly set.
- From a Home screen, touch and swipe up to display all apps.
- Tap Messages.
- Tap the Menu icon on the upper right then tap on Settings.
- Tap notifications.
- Tap the notification switch and make sure that it is on.
- Tap Advanced.
- Tap Sound and select an option then tap on save.
- Tap vibrate to turn on if you want your phone to vibrate.
- Tap the show notification dot to turn it on.
- Tap override do not disturb to turn it on.
You should also make sure that the contact that you are having an issue with is not on the blocked number list.
- From a Home screen tap Phone
- Tap the Menu icon then tap Settings.
- Tap Blocked numbers.
- Tap the X to the right of the blocked number, then tap UNBLOCK.
In case the issue still persists then proceed with the troubleshooting steps listed below.
Perform a Soft Reset
Sometimes this issue can be caused by a minor software glitch which can be fixed by refreshing the phone software. A soft reset must be performed in this case. This is done by pressing and holding the Power button for approximately 10 seconds or until the device power cycles. Check if the issue still occurs.
Start the phone in Safe Mode
There are instances when an app you downloaded can cause this problem. To verify if this is the case you will need to start the phone in Safe Mode as only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run in this mode.
- From the home screen, press and hold the Power key.
- Release the Power key, then tap and hold Power off.
- Read the Reboot to safe mode message and tap OK.
- The device will power off and restart in safe mode.
If the problem does not occur in this mode then the problem could be caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.
Perform a factory reset
One last troubleshooting step to consider is a factory reset. This will revert the phone back to its original factory condition. Make sure to backup your phone data before doing this step.
- Hold the Power Button Until the Phone Is Off
- Hold the Power Button and the Volume Down Button for a Few Seconds
- Wait to See Fastboot Mode on the Screen
- Let Go of the Buttons
- Select Recovery Mode
- Wait for the Android Robot Image to Pop Up
- Hold Down the Power Button and Then Press the Volume Up Button
- Select Wipe Data/Factory Reset
- Select Yes
- Select Reboot System Now
Once the reset is complete the issue will most likely disappear.
