How to Fix Galaxy S25 Black Screen After Update

If your Galaxy S25 suddenly shows a black screen after an update, there is usually still a good chance the phone is powered on in the background. In many cases, the problem is caused by a temporary system crash, a display wake bug, a failed app process, or an update-related cache issue rather than permanent hardware damage.

This guide focuses on practical fixes that usually work for the Galaxy S25, Galaxy S25+, and Galaxy S25 Ultra. Follow the steps in order until the display comes back and the phone starts behaving normally again.

Fix #1: Force restart the Galaxy S25

Press and hold the Volume Down button and the Side button at the same time for up to 20 seconds. If the screen was black because the firmware froze after the update, the phone should reboot and show the Samsung logo.

This is the fastest and most effective fix for a black screen that appeared out of nowhere after installing new software.

Fix #2: Charge the phone for at least 20 minutes

Connect the original Samsung cable and a reliable wall charger, then leave the phone alone for at least 20 minutes. A bad update can increase background activity right after installation, which may drain the battery faster than expected and make it look like the phone is dead.

After charging, try another force restart.

Fix #3: Check for signs that the phone is still running

Call the device, send it a message, or connect it to a charger and check for vibration, notification sounds, or warmth near the camera area. If the phone still responds, the issue is likely display-related rather than a full boot failure.

That helps narrow the problem and makes the next steps more effective.

Fix #4: Boot into Recovery Mode and restart

Turn the phone off if possible. Then connect it to a computer with a USB-C cable, press and hold Volume Up and the Side button, and release both when the Samsung logo appears. In Recovery Mode, use the volume keys to highlight Reboot system now and press the Side button to confirm.

If the screen works in recovery, the panel is fine and the problem is more likely tied to Android or an app conflict.

Fix #5: Wipe the cache partition

From Recovery Mode, select Wipe cache partition, confirm, and then choose Reboot system now. This removes temporary system files that may have become incompatible after the update.

It does not erase your personal data, so it is safe to try before doing anything more drastic.

Fix #6: Boot into Safe Mode

If the phone starts but the screen goes black again at the lock screen or Home screen, try Safe Mode. Press and hold the Power menu option on screen until Safe mode appears, then tap it. On some builds, you can power on and hold Volume Down as the Samsung logo appears.

If Safe Mode works, uninstall recently updated launchers, battery tools, overlays, screen filters, or always-on display apps.

Fix #7: Disable Adaptive Brightness and Always On Display

After the screen comes back, go to Settings > Display and temporarily turn off Adaptive brightness and Always On Display. Update-related screen wake bugs sometimes show up around lock screen transitions and brightness control.

Also install any newer firmware patch if Samsung has already pushed a follow-up fix.

Fix #8: Check for app or system updates

Open Galaxy Store and Play Store and update all apps. Then go to Settings > Software update and check for another patch. Sometimes the first release introduces a display bug and the next patch quietly fixes it.

Fix #9: Back up your data and factory reset if needed

If the black screen keeps returning and Recovery Mode still works, back up everything you can and perform a factory reset from Recovery Mode. This removes corrupted update leftovers and persistent app conflicts.

Only do this after the earlier fixes fail because it wipes the phone.

When to suspect hardware damage

If the phone never shows anything on the screen, does not appear in recovery, and only vibrates or makes sounds, the display assembly or connector may have failed around the same time as the update. In that case, professional diagnosis is the next step.

If your Galaxy S25 black screen problem started immediately after installing a new update, the fixes above usually restore the display without a repair. Start with the force restart and cache wipe first, since those solve the issue most often.
