Effective Methods to Permanently Remove Bing Search Engine from Your Browser

For many users, the default search engine set by their browser or operating system can be a source of frustration, especially when it is set to Bing without their preference. Here are the detailed steps to permanently remove Bing as the default search engine from popular browsers like Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Microsoft Edge.

Removing Bing from Google Chrome

To remove Bing from Google Chrome, follow these steps:

On Desktop

  • Open Google Chrome and click the three-dot menu ⋮ located in the upper-right corner.
  • Select "Settings" from the dropdown menu.
  • In the "Settings" page, click on "Search engine" in the left sidebar.
  • Under the "Search engine used in the address bar" section, select a non-Bing search engine from the drop-down menu. If your preferred search engine is not listed, click "Manage search engines and site search" and select the three dots next to your preferred search engine to choose "Make Default"[2][5].
  • In the same three-dot menu, select "Extensions" to view all installed browser extensions.
  • Remove any Bing-related extensions such as Microsoft Rewards, Give with Bing, or Bing Pages by clicking the "Remove" button next to each extension[1][5].

Managing Startup Pages

  • Click the "On startup" tab in the left panel of the Chrome settings.
  • Ensure that Bing is not set as one of the startup pages. If it is, click the three dots next to the Bing page and select "Remove"[1].

Clearing Browser Cache and Cookies

  • To ensure no residual settings are causing Bing to persist, clear the browser cache and cookies. Go to the three-dot menu, select "More Tools" > "Clear browsing data," and check the boxes for "Cookies and other site data" and "Cached images and files." Then, click "Clear data"[5].

Removing Bing from Mozilla Firefox

  • Open Mozilla Firefox and click the hamburger menu (three horizontal lines) in the top-right corner.
  • Select "Settings" from the menu.
  • In the left sidebar, click "Search."
  • Under the "Default Search Engine" section, click the drop-down menu and select a non-Bing search engine. If your preferred search engine is not listed, you can add it manually and then set it as the default[2].

On Mobile

  • Launch Firefox on your mobile device, tap the three dots in the top-right corner, and choose "Settings."
  • Select "Search" and find the search engine you want to make the default. Beside it, tap the radio button to set it as the default search engine[2].

Removing Bing from Microsoft Edge

On Desktop

  • Open Microsoft Edge and click the three dots in the top-right corner, then choose "Settings."
  • In the left sidebar, click "Privacy, Search, and Services."
  • Scroll down to the "Services" section and click "Address Bar and Search."
  • At the bottom of the page, click "Manage Search Engines."
  • Next to the non-Bing search engine you want to use, click the three dots and choose "Make Default"[2].

On Mobile

  • Access Edge on your mobile device, tap the three dots in the bottom bar, and select "Settings."
  • In "Settings," select "General" and then choose "Select Search Engine."
  • Select the new search engine you want to make the default[2].

Additional Steps for Windows Users

For users on Windows 11, Bing can be deeply integrated into the operating system, affecting not just the browser but also the Start menu and taskbar.

  • Open the Settings app by pressing the Windows key + I or by right-clicking the Start icon and selecting "Settings."
  • Go to "Privacy & Security" and scroll down to the "Search permissions" section.
  • Turn off the options under "Cloud content search" and "Show search highlights" to remove Bing from the Start menu and taskbar[3].

Changing Default Pages in Microsoft Edge

  • If Bing is set as the default home page in Microsoft Edge, you can change it by going to the Edge settings, clicking the three dots in the top-right corner, and selecting "Settings."
  • Enable the home button on the toolbar if needed, and add a new page by entering the URL of your preferred homepage (e.g., Google) and clicking "Add." Restart the browser to apply the changes[3].

By following these steps, users can effectively remove Bing as the default search engine from their browsers and other integrated parts of their operating system, ensuring a more personalized and preferred browsing experience.

One Comment

  1. That’s not really removing it. Just setting something else as default.
It’s annoying that Mozilla picks two huge search engines and hard codes them into FF.
