How to Fix 7 Days to Die Not Launching on PC
7 Days to Die may refuse to launch or crash on startup due to corrupted files, outdated drivers, or compatibility issues. Here are all the methods to get the game running on your PC, updated for the 1.0 release.
Method 1: Verify Game File Integrity
Corrupted or missing game files are the most common reason 7 Days to Die fails to launch.
- Open Steam and go to your Library.
- Right-click 7 Days to Die and select Properties.
- Click Installed Files in the left sidebar.
- Click Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to complete and repair any corrupted files.
- Launch the game.
Method 2: Update GPU Drivers
Outdated graphics drivers can cause launch failures, especially after the game’s 1.0 update which significantly changed the graphics engine.
- For NVIDIA: Open GeForce Experience and install the latest Game Ready driver.
- For AMD: Open AMD Software and check for driver updates.
- Restart your PC after installing new drivers.
- Try launching the game again.
Method 3: Run as Administrator
Running the game with administrator privileges ensures it can access all required system resources.
- Navigate to your 7 Days to Die installation folder (right-click the game in Steam, Manage, Browse local files).
- Right-click 7DaysToDie.exe and select Properties.
- Click the Compatibility tab.
- Check Run this program as an administrator.
- Click Apply and OK.
- Launch the game through Steam.
Method 4: Update DirectX and Visual C++ Redistributables
Missing or outdated runtime libraries can prevent the game from starting.
- Navigate to your 7 Days to Die installation folder.
- Look for a _CommonRedist or Redist folder.
- Run the DirectX and Visual C++ installers found there.
- If the folder does not exist, download the latest Visual C++ Redistributables from Microsoft’s website.
- Restart your PC and try launching the game.
Method 5: Delete Game Configuration Files
Corrupted config files from a previous version can prevent the game from starting properly.
- Navigate to %AppData%/7DaysToDie (press Windows Key + R, type %appdata%, and find the 7DaysToDie folder).
- Delete or rename the entire folder (this will reset your game settings but not your saved worlds).
- Launch the game. It will create new default configuration files.
Method 6: Disable Antivirus
Some antivirus programs can block game files from loading, causing the game to fail on startup.
- Temporarily disable your antivirus real-time protection.
- Try launching the game.
- If the game launches, add the 7 Days to Die installation folder to your antivirus exception list.
- Re-enable your antivirus after adding the exception.
Method 7: Reinstall the Game
If all else fails, a clean reinstall ensures all game files are fresh and uncorrupted.
- In Steam, right-click 7 Days to Die, select Manage, then Uninstall.
- Navigate to the Steam folder and delete any remaining 7 Days to Die files.
- Delete the %AppData%/7DaysToDie folder as well.
- Reinstall the game from your Steam Library.
- Launch and test.
