Tesla Supercharging Study Reveals Battery Life Not Significantly Affected
A long-held concern among electric vehicle owners has been the potential impact of frequent fast charging on battery longevity. However, a recent study by Recurrent, analyzing data from over 13,000 Tesla vehicles, reveals that frequent Supercharging does not significantly affect Tesla battery life.

The study compared Tesla vehicles that fast charge more than 70% of the time to those that fast charge less than 30% of the time. Surprisingly, the analysis of over 160,000 data points found no statistically significant difference in range degradation between these two groups.
No Significant Difference in Range Degradation
Despite the expectation that frequent high-voltage charging would accelerate battery degradation, the data shows that Tesla batteries degrade similarly regardless of the frequency of fast charging. This finding is consistent across different models, including the Model 3 and Model Y.
Factors Affecting Battery Performance
While frequent fast charging does not appear to harm battery longevity, other factors can impact battery performance. Tesla and the study warn against fast charging under extreme heat or cold, as these conditions can stress the battery and affect its performance. It is advisable to avoid fast charging when the battery is very hot, very cold, or at an extreme state of charge, such as 5% or 90%.
Battery Degradation Over Time
All Tesla batteries, regardless of charging habits, do show range degradation over time. This is a natural process for lithium-ion batteries, which lose capacity with age and use. Tesla's data indicates that their vehicles typically lose about 12% of battery capacity after 200,000 miles.
Real-World Implications
The study's findings are based on data from relatively young vehicles, with 90% of the vehicles analyzed being from 2018 or later, and 57% from 2021 or later. This means the study primarily looks at the impact of fast charging over a 5-6 year period. It remains to be seen if there will be a cumulative effect on battery longevity over longer periods.

For EV owners who plan to keep their vehicles for an extended period, it may still be prudent to reserve high-voltage charging for road trips. However, for daily use, the study suggests that frequent fast charging is not a significant concern.
