Tesla Releases 2024.27.20 Software Update With Full Self-Driving 12.5.4

Tesla has begun rolling out its latest software update, version 2024.27.20, which introduces several significant enhancements, including an updated version of Full Self-Driving (FSD) and an expanded Actually Smart Summon (ASS) feature.

Full Self-Driving (Supervised) v12.5.4

The 2024.27.20 update brings FSD to version 12.5.4, marking a substantial upgrade to the city-streets driving stack. This version utilizes a single end-to-end neural network trained on millions of video clips, replacing over 300,000 lines of explicit C++ code. This neural network approach is designed to improve the vehicle's ability to navigate complex urban environments.

Key features of FSD v12.5.4 include the ability to make lane changes, select forks to follow navigation routes, navigate around other vehicles and objects, and execute left and right turns. However, it is crucial to note that FSD remains a supervised feature, requiring drivers to remain attentive and cautious at all times. The system does not render the vehicle fully autonomous, and users must be prepared to intervene if necessary.

Actually Smart Summon (ASS)

One of the most anticipated features in this update is the expansion of Actually Smart Summon (ASS). This feature allows Tesla owners to summon their vehicles to their location or send the vehicle to a specified target within a parking lot or driveway. The range for ASS has been significantly increased to 279 feet (85 meters), providing greater convenience for users.

To use ASS, owners need to open the Tesla mobile app, navigate to the Summon tab, and press and hold the "COME TO ME" or "GO TO TARGET" buttons. The app provides a live feed from the car's cameras to guide supervision. If the Summon feature is used for more than 7.5 minutes, the Tesla will automatically park itself. It is important to use ASS and the simpler "Dumb Summon" feature only in controlled environments like parking lots and driveways, and to continuously monitor the vehicle's surroundings.

Additional Features and Improvements

  • LiveOne Powered by Slacker Radio: The Streaming app has been updated to LiveOne, accessible via the Application Launcher. This requires Premium Connectivity or a WiFi connection.

  • Parental Controls: The update includes enhanced Parental Controls, allowing owners to set a maximum speed limit, limit acceleration to "Chill" mode, and enable safety features such as Speed Limit Warning, Automatic Emergency Braking, and Forward Collision Warning. These controls can be configured through the vehicle or the Tesla mobile app.

  • Improved Front Camera Clarity: Video post-processing is now applied to the front camera for hardware 3-based vehicles, enhancing camera clarity and providing sharper and more natural-looking video.

  • New Ambient Lighting Options: Users can now adjust the brightness and color of the vehicle's accent lights, including an option to turn them on only in dim conditions.

  • Security Improvements: The update includes important security fixes and improvements to ensure the vehicle's systems remain secure.

  • Reduce Fan Speed During Calls: The fan speed will automatically lower during phone calls to reduce ambient noise, a feature that can be temporarily disabled under Bluetooth settings if needed.

  • New Key Required Screen: A new screen notification will appear when attempting to perform actions that require a key but none is detected nearby.

Upcoming Features

Tesla has also outlined several upcoming improvements and features:

  • Earlier and More Natural Lane Change Decisions: Future updates will enhance the FSD system to make lane changes earlier and more naturally.

  • End-to-End Highway Driving: The FSD system will soon support end-to-end highway driving, further expanding its capabilities.

  • Full Self-Driving on Cybertruck: Tesla is working towards enabling FSD on the Cybertruck model.

  • HomeLink and myQ Garage Integration: ASS will soon integrate with HomeLink and myQ garage systems, allowing for more seamless home arrival experiences.

  • Use Without Continuous Press: Future updates will enable the use of ASS without the need for continuous button presses.

These updates reflect Tesla's ongoing commitment to enhancing the driving experience and pushing the boundaries of autonomous driving technology.
