Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang Praises Elon Musk’s AI Focus: “He’s Working on Exactly the Right Things”

In a wide-ranging interview at CES 2024 in Las Vegas, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang offered strong support for Elon Musk’s various AI initiatives, highlighting the Tesla CEO’s strategic positioning across multiple crucial AI domains. Speaking to Bloomberg’s Ed Ludlow, Huang particularly emphasized Musk’s comprehensive approach to artificial intelligence development.

“He’s working on some of the most important AI areas,” Huang noted. “xAI is working on foundation cognitive intelligence AI. Tesla is working on autonomous vehicles and Optimus for humanoid robotics. These three areas of AI are the most important areas of AI. I think he’s working on exactly the right things.”

When questioned about Musk’s influence on the incoming administration’s AI policies, Huang maintained a diplomatic stance while reaffirming Musk’s positive outlook on AI’s future. “I don’t know about the attitude towards AI [in the administration]. I know Elon’s attitude towards AI, and he’s very optimistic about its future,” Huang stated.

Particularly noteworthy was Huang’s enthusiastic assessment of Tesla’s self-driving capabilities. “Elon has a great advantage because his AI factory for his cars is fantastic, it has a lot of Nvidia gear in it. His AV algorithms are incredible. It’s the best in the world,” Huang emphasized. He specifically pointed to Tesla’s massive real-world data advantage, noting that their large fleet of vehicles on the road provides unparalleled data collection capabilities, putting them in what he called “a phenomenal position” in the autonomous driving race.

The interview also revealed interesting insights about the relationship between Tesla and Nvidia. Huang praised Tesla’s AI capabilities, particularly highlighting their data collection advantages. “Elon has a great advantage because number one, his AI Factory for his cars is fantastic, has a lot of Nvidia gear in it.

His AV algorithms are incredible – it’s the best in the world,” Huang acknowledged, also noting Tesla’s significant advantage in having a large fleet of vehicles collecting real-world data.

The conversation touched on the complementary nature of real-world and synthetic data in AI development. While Tesla is known for its focus on vision-based real-world data collection, Huang explained that Nvidia’s synthetic data approach through their new Cosmos platform doesn’t compete with but rather augments real-world data collection efforts.

Looking toward the future, Huang expressed enthusiasm about meeting with the incoming administration to discuss AI policy. When asked about potential meetings with President-elect Trump at Mar-a-Lago, Huang responded positively: “I’d be delighted to go see him and congratulate him and do everything we can to help this Administration succeed.”

The interview underscored Nvidia’s continuing role as a key infrastructure provider in the AI revolution, with Huang positioning the company as a foundational technology provider supporting various AI initiatives, including those led by Musk.

Despite potential changes in trade policies and technology export restrictions under the new administration, Huang maintained an optimistic outlook while emphasizing Nvidia’s commitment to working within whatever framework the administration establishes.

This conversation at CES 2024 highlights the increasingly intertwined nature of major tech players in the AI space, with Huang’s comments suggesting a collaborative rather than competitive relationship between Nvidia and Musk’s various AI ventures, even as both pursue leadership positions in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence landscape.
