Nest x Yale vs August Smart Lock Pro 3 Best Smart Locks

Nest x Yale vs August Smart Lock Pro 3

1) Nest x Yale

The Nest x Yale has been a few years in the making and is part of the two companies’ limited partnership to bring automated smart locks. The result is a beautiful all automatic smart lock that looks appealing on your door and can also be operated using just a smartphone. However, this requires you to invest in a Nest Connect device. But once setup, everything is pretty seamless and works exactly as you expect. But that’s not to say that this smart lock isn’t without its flaws, in fact, it has quite a few.

To begin with, while the two companies have offered a beautiful design on the front, the back portion (the one facing the inside of the room/house) is slightly bigger and for some reason is also where the battery slots are placed. Speaking of batteries, the Nest x Yale runs on a single Lithium Polymer battery, and is expected to offer decent battery life. Everything else works exactly as expected, so you’ll find the functionality here to be no different than any other smart lock in the market.

I feel the installation process could’ve certainly been easier given what we’ve seen from companies like Schlage. We’re sincerely hoping for Nest and Yale to bring out another variant of this product, perfecting all the little glitches that we’ve listed above. Bear in mind that the issues here are not major, but given the kind of products that the competitors are offering, it certainly can be annoying. While the company lists the Nest x Yale for a fair price, it can be bought for much cheaper via online retailers.

2) August Smart Lock Pro 3

This is a viable competitor to the Nest x Yale as it comes with pretty much all the features you can expect in a smart lock. Although it also comes with Alexa, Siri, and Google Assistant support, you will need the August Connect Wi-Fi bridge to enable compatibility. There are several bundles out there that can help you find a good price on both products.

In terms of features, the 3rd gen Smart Lock Pro will lock behind you and unlock automatically as you approach the door. This means you will no longer require keys if you’re thinking of using this smart lock. However, the lock can still be used with existing lock and key combinations, making this ideal for those seeking an upgrade of their single-cylinder deadbolt. This also somewhat limits its compatibility, but given its size, a smart lock like this is ideally suited for rooms rather than main doors.

The company also talks about something called DoorSense which ensures that the door is completely locked each time, adding an extra layer of security for you. One of my favorite features of smart locks is the ability to track door activity, especially when you’re not at home. Thanks to the automation here, you will have a full activity feed of the lock. You can also grant temporary access to the door for people of your choosing. This can be for a week, a month or even longer if you prefer, making this a truly versatile offering. There’s no touchscreen on board here though, so a combination of motion sensing and proximity to your connected device is how this lock operates.

While we would have loved Alexa’s support out of the box, the size of the Smart Lock Pro doesn’t allow for this. Barring this, the smart lock ticks all the boxes for us. The company offers the Smart Lock Pro in two colors – Dark Gray and Silver, letting you pick the color best suited for your door. In terms of pricing, a bundle with the Smart Lock Pro and the Connect Wi-Fi Bridge will cost you pretty much the same as the Nest x Yale, making this a relatively easy choice for the customers.

Conclusion on Nest x Yale vs August Smart Lock Pro 3

As is the case with any comparison, it finally comes down to personal preference. While both the Nest x Yale and the August Smart Lock Pro 3 are exceptional offerings in their own right, they are not without their (crucial) differences. While August uses a slightly smaller exterior but packs it with the best features on board, the Nest x Yale offers pretty much the same feature but misses out on a few key areas like installation and design.

The design aspect is barely a concern for the August Smart Lock Pro 3 because of its size and compatibility. It is also worth mentioning that while the Smart Lock Pro is relatively smaller and doesn’t have a touchscreen display, it can still be used as a primary door lock (single cylinder only). This is due to the fact that access to the door can be shared conveniently through the August Home app.

Taking these factors into account, choosing between the two products becomes that much harder. It comes down to your choice. While some would prefer a proper smart lock experience wherein you don’t need a key or a code and the lock automatically opens. On the other hand, there are customers who find it more reliable to physically type in the codes before entering their door, which also gives users an extra sense of security. The pricing, however, might sway customers in the favor of the August Smart Lock Pro 3.
