How To Fix LG Dryer Not Turning On

LG Electronics makes both gas and electric dryers that provide consumers the convenience when washing their clothes. This appliance is an essential time-saver and precious hours won’t be wasted just to dry your washed clothes. 

However, instead of saving your precious time, an LG dryer might malfunction and won’t start or turn on. There are settings that might not have an immediate start or may lock the control panel and this would require a quick adjustment. Let us get some LG dryer troubleshooting tips in case your LG dryer won’t start as you read further. 

LG Dryer Not Turning On

Check the Power Source

If there is no power on your LG dryer, it is required to check the power source first. To verify the power source: 

• Ensure that the cord is plugged into a functioning outlet. Always check the power cord and outlet. 
• Double check your home’s circuit breaker box and reset any tripped breakers. Look for any tripped circuit breaker or blown thermal fuse on your home’s electrical wirings. Even if the LG dryer’s circuit breaker isn’t tripped, please turn it off and wait 30 seconds before turning it back on. If you have an  electric dryer, that means it uses two breakers while a gas dryer only has one.
• Don’t use an extension cord as they are prone to short circuits and they can’t safely convey the voltage a dryer requires. They may lead to overheating that will eventually shut off the power of the LG dryer.

You can confirm if there is a power on your LG dryer by opening the door and you will see the drum light turn on.

Check The LG Dryer Door

As a safety precaution for any washing appliances, including an LG dryer, the dryer motor won’t start if the door is not completely closed. To make sure that the dryer door is properly closed, push it firmly to make sure the latch or door switch is engaged. 

If it is not possible to fully close the dryer door, there’s a possibility that the latch is damaged or electrical failure has occurred. You will need to bring the LG dryer to an authorized service center if there is visible damage to the latch, or if multimeter testing shows no continuity.

Adjust Dryer Settings

If you are able to close the door completely and you still have an LG dryer not turning on and the control panel is illuminated, it is time to check and adjust some settings. It is possible that  the wrong dryer setting is selected. There are certain settings on an LG dryer that may hinder immediate starting, such as Steam Dry, and it may only tumble clothing intermittently. 

Double checking your cycle selections and making any necessary adjustments before starting the dryer should always be performed. When you see the letter “CL” on the dryer’s panel, that means the child lock feature has been enabled. This is a safety measure on LG dryer to prevent it from starting or performing any other function. To disable the child lock function, simply press the child lock button for about 3 seconds. If the letters “CL” has been removed on the display panel, that means it has been successfully disabled. 

A hard reset might be performed if the door is closed properly, panel is illuminated and child lock is disabled but you still have an LG dryer not turning on. To perform this procedure, follow these steps: 

• Unplug the dryer and then turn off its circuit breaker.
• For 5 seconds, press and hold the POWER/START button.
• Then press and hold the PLAY/PAUSE button for 5 seconds.
• Plug the dryer back in and turn on the circuit breaker.

After this, check if your LG dryer is able to work and turn on.

Double Check Thermal Fuse

If the LG dryer won’t start after the hard reset, find out if the thermal fuse is blown. A thermal fuse is a safety device that blows if the dryer overheats. If that happens, electrical flow would be interrupted and there would be no continuity on the LG dryer. This could be the reason why you have an LG dryer not turning on. 

A defective thermal fuse could also lead it to blow. If an overheating occurs, there’s a possibility that it is caused by clogged dryer vents. Should you find out that the thermal fuse is blown, make sure to perform a dryer vent cleaning to remove any blockages. 

To replace the blown thermal fuse, remove the back panel and look for the blower wheel. It is mounted with electrical connectors attached to it in that section of the dryer and you should be able to see it.

Once located, unthread the screws or bolts holding the thermal fuse in place and disconnect its electrical connector. You can now  replace it with the new fuse and secure it in place.

Check the LG Dryer Start Switch

To activate a drying cycle, you will simply need to press the START button on the control panel. Once pressed, it will send a signal to the dryer and the LG dryer would usually start or make any noise after pressing. 

If there’s no sign of starting or noise, there’s a possibility that the cause of the issue is a defective LG dryer start switch. A multimeter testing can help in confirming failure with a lack of continuity. If it is confirmed, the start switch button should be replaced by an authorized LG technician or service center.
