Jason Calacanis Praised ChatGPT O1-Preview For Its Intuitive, Fast, And Informative Conversational Capabilities on Latest All-In Podcast

In a recent episode of the “All In” podcast, tech entrepreneur and investor Jason Calacanis shared his firsthand experience with OpenAI’s latest AI model, ChatGPT O1-Preview. Calacanis described the new version as a “game changer” that is “a year ahead of competitors” in terms of its capabilities.

The most striking feature of O1-Preview, according to Calacanis, is its implementation of chain-of-thought reasoning. This allows the AI to break down complex queries into smaller steps, much like a human would approach problem-solving. Calacanis demonstrated this by inputting a detailed startup funding scenario into the system.

“O1 is the first real chain of thought production system that I think we’ve seen,” Calacanis explained. He noted that the AI took 77 seconds to process the query, during which time it generated multiple sub-queries to fully analyze the situation.

Calacanis was particularly impressed by the AI’s ability to provide a comprehensive breakdown of its thought process. “If you click the down arrow, what you’ll see is it gives you an idea of what its rationale is for interpreting and what secondary queries it’s doing,” he said.

The system’s approach mirrors human cognition more closely than previous iterations. As Calacanis put it, “The model keeps asking itself questions related to the structure of the question that you ask. And then it comes up with a series of steps that it can then call the LLM to do to fill in the blanks, link them all together and come up with the answer.”

This advancement has significant implications for business analytics and decision-making. Calacanis shared an example of how O1-Preview could potentially replace the need for human analysts in certain scenarios.

“You can use O1 and describe, just feed it the data and describe the analysis you want to get out of that data. And within a few minutes… it gives you the entire answer that an analyst would have taken days to put together for you,” he explained.

The impact of this technology is already being felt in Calacanis’ own work. He mentioned that his team is now using O1-Preview to process applications for funding and prepare for meetings.

“The analysts on our team are now putting in the transcripts and key questions about markets and they are getting so smart, so fast,” he said.

Calacanis also highlighted the AI’s potential in legal document analysis. He described how his team is using the technology to compare different versions of legal documents and quickly identify changes, a task that traditionally required significant time and expertise.

The enthusiasm for O1-Preview was so high that Calacanis implemented a policy requiring his team to use it extensively. “I insisted that every person on the team when they hit control tab, it opens a ChatGPT four window in O1,” he said. This led to such heavy usage that they quickly exhausted their allocated credits.

While the full implications of this technology are still unfolding, Calacanis’ review suggests that ChatGPT O1-Preview represents a significant leap forward in AI capabilities, with the potential to transform various aspects of knowledge work and decision-making processes across industries.
