How to Fix iPhone 16 Pro Face ID Broken After iOS 18.6.2
Several iPhone 16 Pro users report that Face ID has stopped working or become unreliable after a software update. These troubleshooting steps address the most common causes of Face ID failures.
Fix #1: Re-Register Face ID
Face ID data on the iPhone 16 Pro can become corrupted after an update. Resetting it forces a fresh enrollment.
- Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode.
- Enter your passcode.
- Tap Reset Face ID.
- Tap Set Up Face ID and follow the on-screen instructions to enroll your face again.
Fix #2: Clean the TrueDepth Camera
Dirt, oil, or screen protector edges covering the TrueDepth camera array above the display can block Face ID.
- Use a clean, lint-free cloth to wipe the top of the screen where the front camera and sensors are located.
- If you have a screen protector, make sure it is not covering the sensor area.
Fix #3: Force Restart
A force restart can resolve temporary Face ID sensor failures.
- Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
- Press and quickly release the Volume Down button.
- Press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.
Fix #4: Update iOS
Apple has fixed Face ID bugs in past iOS updates.
- Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
- Install any available update.
Fix #5: Reset All Settings
If Face ID broke after an update, resetting all settings can restore it without erasing data.
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings.
Fix #6: Contact Apple Support
If Face ID still does not work after a factory reset and fresh Face ID enrollment, the TrueDepth camera module may be faulty. Visit an Apple Store for hardware diagnostics.
