Google Maps puts another bullet in physical navigation hardware

A new update to Google Maps is making physical GPS navigation hardware even more meaningless. Google is actually rolling out some Waze features to Maps, now allowing users to see speed limit indicators as well as speed camera alerts.

It’s actually turning out to be a full-on speedometer. Google will show you the speed limit of the road you’re on in the bottom-left corner of the app, and then show you what your actual speed is right next to that.

It shows you your speed in varying colors, such as red for if you are over the speed limit.

The new speedometer functionality isn’t widely available yet, with it only available in select countries. It’s also been reported that it doesn’t yet work with Android Auto, but we imagine that’s coming down the line.
