Delta Partners with JetZero to Develop Revolutionary Blended-Wing Aircraft

In a bold step toward sustainable aviation, Delta Air Lines has announced a partnership with JetZero to develop a blended-wing-body (BWB) aircraft. This innovative design promises to be 50% more fuel-efficient than traditional tube-and-wing aircraft, marking a significant milestone in the aviation industry’s journey toward reducing carbon emissions. The collaboration was revealed on March 5, 2025, and is part of Delta’s broader commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

What Is a Blended-Wing-Body Aircraft?

The BWB design merges the wings and fuselage into a single, seamless structure, creating a more aerodynamic and fuel-efficient aircraft. This design reduces drag, increases lift, and allows for a lighter overall structure. The aircraft will also be capable of using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), further reducing its environmental impact.

JetZero, a California-based startup, has been at the forefront of BWB development. The company received a grant from the U.S. Air Force in 2023 to build a full-scale demonstrator, which is expected to take its first flight in 2027. Delta’s partnership will provide operational expertise and support to accelerate the commercialization of this groundbreaking technology.

The BWB aircraft offers several advantages over traditional designs:

Delta will also collaborate on the interior design of the aircraft, aiming to enhance the passenger experience with features like dedicated overhead bin space, accessible seating, and fewer rows for a more spacious cabin.

Delta’s Role in the Partnership

As part of its Sustainable Skies Lab, Delta will leverage its operational expertise to help JetZero bring the BWB aircraft to market. The airline will provide insights into maintenance, operations, and customer experience to ensure the aircraft meets the needs of both passengers and airlines. This partnership is Delta’s fourth major initiative under its Sustainability Roadmap, which was launched in 2023.
