BYD’s New ‘Megawatt’ EV Charging Gets 249 miles Range in Five Minutes

BYD has unveiled its groundbreaking Super e-Platform, which promises to revolutionize electric vehicle (EV) charging with the capability to charge at an astonishing 1,000 kilowatts (one megawatt). This innovative platform allows vehicles to add an impressive 249 miles of range in just five minutes, marking a significant advancement in the EV market.

The Super e-Platform: A Game Changer for EV Charging

The Super e-Platform operates on a 1,000-volt electrical architecture, surpassing the current industry standards, which typically peak around 800 to 900 volts. This higher voltage enables the platform to deliver charging power at a rate of 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) per second, making it one of the fastest charging solutions available.

With the ability to handle up to 1,000 amps of current, the platform can replenish a vehicle’s range in a fraction of the time it currently takes with conventional EV chargers. This advancement addresses one of the most significant drawbacks of electric vehicles: the lengthy charging times that often deter potential buyers.

Infrastructure Development for High-Powered Charging

To support this new charging technology, BYD plans to establish a network of 4,000 specialized charging stations across China. These high-powered units require substantial electrical capacity and direct access to high-voltage mains, which may limit their deployment to areas with robust grid infrastructure. While the company has not provided a timeline for the construction of these stations, the ambitious plan indicates a commitment to making ultra-fast charging widely accessible.

Performance Features of BYD’s New EVs

The first vehicles built on the Super e-Platform, including the BYD Han L and Tang L, are already available for pre-order in China. Priced at $37,350 and $38,700 respectively, these models are designed to charge faster than any other EV currently on the market. They feature high-performance motors capable of spinning at over 30,000 rpm, delivering an output of up to 777 horsepower, the highest for a single motor.

The Han L sedan and Tang L SUV boast impressive acceleration, reaching 62 mph (100 km/h) from a standstill in just 2.7 and 3.6 seconds, respectively. With top speeds of 190 mph and 170 mph, these vehicles are not only fast in terms of charging but also in performance.

A Turning Point for Electric Vehicles

The launch of the Super e-Platform represents a potential turning point in the electric vehicle industry, as it aims to make charging as convenient as refueling a gasoline car. BYD’s commitment to developing an extensive network of one-megawatt chargers is crucial for users to fully benefit from this technology.

By positioning itself as a leader in both sales and technological innovation, BYD is addressing one of the primary concerns of EV buyers: charging convenience. The introduction of this platform could significantly enhance the appeal of electric vehicles, paving the way for broader adoption in the market.
