The one “con” to Horizon: Zero Dawn is that it’s a pretty short game. It’s engaging and addicting, which might have players “binging” it; however, once you’re done, you only want more. Unfortunately, we’re not sure if it’s set to get an expansion yet; however, there are some similar games with rich narratives out there. Here are some of our favorites to tide you over until Zero Dawn sees some added DLC!

Best Games Like Horizon Zero Dawn

1) Mass Effect: Andromeda

The Mass Effect is probably as close to the style of Horizon New Dawn as you can get without “cloning” the game. That said, Mass Effect: Andromeda, the latest title in the series, has some of the best narrative and story telling that we’ve seen. In addition to an immersive, open-world, Andromeda focuses on player-choice so that no playthrough is the same, giving every player a unique outcome because of the different choices that they’ve made. If you don’t mind some heavy science fiction style, Andromeda will be a great replacement for Horizon New Dawn, at least for now. BioWare, the developers, are known for its story telling abilities, and so, Andromeda doesn’t disappoint.

2) Dragon Age: Inquisition

Up next, Dragon Age: Inquisition is a far cry different from Horizon New Dawn; however, it still has an excellent narrative-driven style, and made by BioWare, it has some of the best story telling in the industry. That said, the plot to the game is pretty standard as far as fantasy style games go — a cataclysmic event brings the land into turmoil, various factions erupt in turmoil, the world is an absolute chaos, and now you’re the only one who can save it and restore peace. Still, BioWare has managed to make it really engaging, especially with how player-choice affects the end of the game.

3) The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim

Similar to Dragon Age, Skyrim is another game — in the Elder Scrolls series — that is a far cry different from Horizon New Dawn. That’s because it takes on a fantasy style — magic, warriors, dragons, etc — however, Skyrim keeps players engaged with a rich story line that takes a bunch of twists and turns. It’s similar to Horizon New Dawn in that way, but does stay true to its fantasy RPG roots — there are dragons, tons of classes, a dynamic character progression system, and a massive character customization mechanic. Skyrim is easily one of the hottest role playing games available today, and can even be had for the PlayStation 4.

4) Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is another fantasy RPG, but comes with a rich and engaging story line that rivals the one in Horizon Zero Dawn. The Kingdom of Amalur has hundreds of hours of content for you to enjoy, between a rich primary story line and hundreds of side quests.  One of the highlights of this game is that it has some natural and believable dialog, which is where some of that great storytelling comes from. On top of that, it has a fluid and seamless combat system, as well as a massive open world for you to explore.

Kingdoms of Amalur is really nice for those who like making character backgrounds, as there’s a massive system for customizing your character. He or she will truly be unique, and on top of that, there are millions of combinations of skills, abilities, weapons and pieces of armor to make that character stand out.

5) Fallout 76

Right up there with Mass Effect: Andromeda, Fallout 76 is another game that gets you close to the sci-fi or steampunk style that Horizon New Dawn features. As is the case with most Bethesda games, Fallout 76 has a narrative and story line that will be hard to put down, especially now that it all takes in a persistent, online world. You’ll get to play with actual people here; however, you’ll get to choose for yourself whether you want to fly solo, or work with other people to accomplish difficult tasks ahead of you. You still get all of the awesome features and game mechanics that makes Fallout great, such as the V.A.T.S. system.
