Google Pixel 3a

The Pixel 3a is Google’s answer to manufacturers like Samsung, Huawei etc who have taken a hold of the midrange smartphone market. Launched not too long ago, the Pixel 3a brings the promise of stock Android and speedy updates with a midrange hardware. It’s packing a 5.6-inch 2220 x 1080 OLED display, offering excellent viewing angles, sunlight visibility, as well as features like always-on display without eating into the battery too much. So how impressive is the 2019 edition P Smart? Well, it’s packing a 6.21-inch 2340 x 1080 IPS LCD panel with a screen-to-body ratio of 83.1%, which quite frankly could’ve been better. It’s running the octa-core Kirin 710 processor with the Mali-G51 MP4 GPU. The P Smart packs 3GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable storage.

In terms of camera, the back has a 13MP + 2MP dual camera layout with pretty impressive AI features as well as depth features (bokeh). You will also find the fingerprint scanner on the back. The front has a moderate 8MP camera here, which should be perfect for selfies and video calls. The 2019 P Smart comes with a 3,400 mAh battery with support for 10W fast charging (charger included). Moto Z3 Play

Although this phone was launched around a year ago, it’s still worth checking out considering the hardware it’s packing. Nokia 7.1

Nokia, since its revival, hasn’t made quite the splash in the North American markets as of yet. However, the company has been churning out phones in other markets with a certain degree of success. The Nokia 7.1 is one of them and thanks largely to a combination of excellent hardware and a moderate price tag, this device is definitely worth considering. The phone comes with a 5.84-inch 2280 x 1080 LCD panel, which is slightly underwhelming compared to OLED panels. The popular Snapdragon 636 octa-core chipset is also present here which is accompanied by the Adreno 509 GPU.

In terms of storage, you get 64GB to play with, which can be expanded using a microSD card. There’s 4GB of RAM as well, which is in line with most modern mid-rangers. The 7.1 sports a 12MP + 5MP rear camera layout with depth capturing features and a single 8MP camera sensor on the front. What’s exciting about this device is the fact that it’s an Android One offering, which makes it one of the first devices to get future Android updates along with Google’s Pixel phones. Although the Nokia 7.1 was launched with Android 8.1, Nokia was quick to send out the Android 9.0 Pie update. The phone packs a 3,060 mAh battery underneath, which is supported by the company’s 18W charging tech. The phone is sold in Steel and Blue colors.

Sony Xperia 10 Plus

Although Sony’s Xperia lineup has pretty much failed to impress, it hasn’t stopped the Japanese manufacturer from trying to better its past performance. The Xperia 10 Plus was launched earlier this year and packs a gorgeous 6.5-inch 2520 x 1080 IPS LCD panel. This is protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass 5. In terms of processing power, you get the octa-core Snapdragon 636 here, along with the Adreno 509 GPU. There’s a 12MP + 8MP rear camera setup here with the smaller sensor aiding telephoto shots. The front is equipped with a single 8MP sensor.

As Sony has done in the past, the Xperia 10 Plus comes with a side mounted fingerprint scanner. You get USB C charging here along with a 3,000 mAh battery supported by 18W fast charging tech. There aren’t a lot of storage variants to choose from with the company only offering the device with 64GB of storage (expandable) and 4GB of RAM. Since the handset was launched this year, it’s no surprise that Android 9.0 Pie runs by default here. However, it will be interesting to see if Sony will be quick enough to offer future updates for the device. The Xperia 10 Plus can be bought in Black at the moment.

Moto One

We just spoke about Nokia’s Android One offering and here’s Moto’s variant. The Moto One comes with a moderately sized 5.9-inch 1520 x 720 display, which puts it at a disadvantage against most midrange offerings available today. The design of the Moto One is pretty impressive as well, offering narrow bezels on the side, although Moto is retaining the company logo on the bottom of the display. Perhaps this can be excused since the Moto One was launched late last year.

The Moto One runs the octa-core Snapdragon 625 processor with the Adreno 506 GPU. You will also find 4GB of RAM and choices between 32 or 64GB of storage which can be expanded with a microSD card. In the camera department, Moto has decided to stick with the popular dual-sensor layout consisting of a 13MP sensor and a 2MP offering with the latter acting as a depth sensor. The Moto One packs a single 8MP camera on the front, which should handle selfies and video calls comfortably. There’s a decent 3,000 mAh sensor here which is supported by the company’s 15W Fast Charger. The company offers the phone in White and Black colors. Although the phone was announced with Android 8.1, it is now eligible for the Android 9.0 update.

Xiaomi Mi A2

The Mi A2 is also known as the Xiaomi Mi 6X in Asia, and runs Android One, making it an exciting handset in the midrange segment. It features a 5.99-inch 2160 x 1080 display, with relatively thick top and bottom bezels. It’s clear that the company has made no compromises in the hardware department here as you can tell from the fantastic camera layout. The rear consists of a 20MP and 12MP sensor, while the front hosts a 20MP sensor for selfies and video calls. The octa-core Snapdragon 660 processor is running here along with the Adreno 512 GPU. The phone packs 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage by default, although there’s no microSD card slot for storage expansion here.

The Mi A2 uses a USB C port and has a rear mounted fingerprint scanner for authentication. There’s a 3,000 mAh battery here which can charge up pretty quickly thanks to 18W charging compatibility (charger included). The phone runs Android 8.1 Oreo but has an update to Android 9.0 Pie. Given that this is an Android One smartphone, it goes without saying that you’re well covered with regards to software. The seller is offering the handset in Black. This is a factory unlocked smartphone, which means it will only work on GSM carriers like AT&T, T-Mobile, MetroPCS etc, leaving out Verizon, Sprint and other CDMA offerings.

LG G7 Fit

Launched late last year, the LG G7 Fit didn’t make much noise in the market. However, that doesn’t change the fact that it’s a solid offering even today. It comes with a 6.1-inch 3120 x 1440 resolution IPS LCD panel. The display supports features like HDR10, Dolby Vision, as well as always-on display. The phone gets its “Fit” moniker from the durable form factor. It is MIL-STD-810G certified, which makes it resistant to drops from up to 6 feet. LG has also built water/dust resistance into the G7 Fit, which is IP68 certified.

LG is sticking to a rear mounted fingerprint scanner, which is no surprise as the company hasn’t experimented too much with this particular feature. The phone is still running Android 8.1 Oreo with no word regarding the Android 9.0 update. This is an unlocked GSM only device, and won’t work on Verizon or Sprint networks in the U.S.

Samsung Galaxy J8

One of Samsung’s prominent 2018 midrange offerings, the Galaxy J8 is a stellar handset even today thanks largely to the hardware packing underneath. This gorgeous handset comes with a 6-inch 1480 x 720 resolution Super AMOLED display. However, the body is made of plastic, which can be somewhat unappealing to look at. However, the bright side to this is that it’s fairly light compared to all-metal phones. In the CPU department, you’re getting the octa-core Snapdragon 450 processor accompanied by the Adreno 506 GPU. The company has been kind enough to offer 64GB of storage (expandable) and 4GB of RAM as well.

On the camera front, the Galaxy J8 uses a combination of 16MP + 5MP sensors on the back to effectively capture photos with bokeh. The front has a decent 16MP camera, allowing for wide angle selfies. The phone packs a rear mounted fingerprint scanner, which keeps the front clean although not devoid of bezels. There’s a decent 3,500 mAh battery here as well, but it may not support all fast chargers. The phone is offered in Black and Lavender colors. This is phone is unlocked to work with a wide range of GSM carriers.

ASUS ZenFone Max Plus

ASUS is no stranger to mid-ranged handsets as the company has continually shown over the years. This particular offering, focuses on one particular aspect that most people seek – battery life. As the name indicates, the ZenFone Max Plus is a battery heavy smartphone, and the 4,130 mAh unit doesn’t disappoint. In addition to supporting 10W fast charging, the ZenFone Max Plus can also charge other devices using the reverse charging feature. This feature alone makes it an extremely handy device to own. So what does the rest of the hardware look like?

Well, the ZenFone Max Plus comes with a 5.7-inch 2160 x 1080 resolution LCD panel. Running the device is the Mediatek MT6750T octa-core chipset with Mali-T860-MP2 GPU. You also get 3GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable storage on board here. It’s also packing dual cameras on the back, consisting of 16MP and 8MP sensors. The front comes with a single 8MP sensor, which should perform decently under suitable conditions. You will also find a fingerprint scanner on the back, much like a few other ASUS phones we’ve seen of late.

Since the ZenFone Max Plus came out in late 2017, it’s not necessarily the newest device on the block. This also means that customers will have to make do with Android 7.0 Nougat on this device.
