Windows Phone 8 Release Revealed To Be On Holiday Season

Although usually tight-lipped about its updates and development, reports have it that the next Windows Phone 8 release will be on the holiday season this year.

A recent job posting by Microsoft suggests that the new phone will be coming by the end of this year. According to the post late last week, the company is looking for a software development engineer for phone testing. The post specifically said that it is a great time to join Microsoft as it gears up to its next release on the holiday season. It also said that it will be bringing “new killer devices and delightful user experiences.”

But until that next release, Microsoft said that it will be coming out first with two updates for its current Windows 8. The updates are simply called GDR2 and GDR3. Phones running on Windows 8 should be compatible with the said updates.

Too Early for a New Release

Windows 8 has only been running in the market for six months, so you can only imagine how its users now feel that the new Windows Phone 8 release will commence by the end of this year. There is much talk, as usual, as to whether Windows 8 is upgradeable to the new release. Consumers were peeved last year when they found out that they cannot upgrade their existing WP7x to WP8.

Microsoft was quick to point out though that most WP8 phones can be upgraded to the new release. Details of the upgrades, however, remain sketchy as of this time.

Microsoft has yet to name its new release of the Windows phone. Whether they will call it Windows 9 remains to be seen, although there has been a lot of rumors about Windows Blue. And because Microsoft keeps their secret on tight leashes, details and specifications about the alleged Windows Blue are still unknown.

But according to a report on TechSpot, the same job posting from Microsoft indicates that Windows Blue will not be an operating system, but will instead be a collection of enhancements and tweaks. Blue will also supposedly come out before the reported new release in December.

Competition Still Tough

The challenge for Microsoft, whose new operating system comes out with a new phone as well like the Nokia Lumia, is to compete with the best in the industry right now—Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android. Although Microsoft is a household name in terms of laptop and personal computers, it has yet to make a splash in the mobile technology industry.

For many years, the battle has always been between Apple and Microsoft when it comes to PCs. But now that the battle has reached another level, Microsoft must show its fangs again and try to come up with something that its loyal OS consumers can adapt to in terms of mobile technology. The rumored new Windows Phone 8 release may be something that Microsoft is getting excited about, but it must also remember that it will have to compete with the launch of Samsung’s S4 and Apple’s iPhone 5S this year.

  1. I think it’s clear by now that the W8Phone is a heck of a nice gadget. I understand that the number of apps doesn’t yet compare, but most of the apps you need are there. The look of the apps available on W8 is mighty nice and they come up quickly. In general, there is at least the appearance of quality, and that there’s a lot of difference from Android and iphone. I have a Lumia 920. It’s solid. Sure it’s “heavy” but it doesn’t need a case. Don’t see how it matters, but if it does, you shouldn’t get it.
