Wet Galaxy S6 won’t turn on and overheating when connected to charger, other issues

Problem 1: Galaxy S6 stuck in boot loop after installing update and rooting

Hi. I received a minor 20MB official update yesterday morning. Went through with it. Then afterwards used cf auto to root my s6 edge plus. It did go in bootloop after first odin flash but after i pressed volume down power pressed restart it booted ok. Things went normal for whole day until night.

Suddenly i take my phone out of my pocket and what i see is a distorted display. I cant explain the display i saw it was something like u see if you put your phone in water for loooong time like colors all distorted like extremely high contrast,  phone was extremely slow in response. I presses any button, nothing would happen for 5-10 seconds. Then after 5-7 minutes it went into Samsung logo bootloop. I waited for 10 minutes for it to recover; it stayed in Samsung logo still distorted display. I thought i lost display IC.

Then i long pressed vol down menu and power until it went into download mode. From there i pressed vol down(cancel and restart). It booted fine and Everything came back to normal and going fine till now about 12 hour since restart.

What do you think caused issue and hasnt caused since restart.

I cant think of any app i installed before that.

Solution: Hi Abu. There’s no way we can we can determine the exact reason for the unexplained boot loop you had given how little information you provide in your description. It can be due to an issue with the firmware or bootloader not loading properly or the rooting app or software failing to configure the system. If you want to get to the bottom of the problem, try to backtrack the steps you did and use the method of elimination in narrowing down possible causes. For example, you can master reset your phone first to bring everything back to stock and remove the rooting software. Afterwards, you can replicate the steps you took by, say, rooting the phone again, and observing how it works afterwards. If nothing happens after that, you want  install apps individually, making sure to test for phone performance after every install. Some apps, especially those that exploit root access can change core system files, which can sometimes lead to all sorts of problems. Don’t treat apps as if they’re perfect. Given how vulnerable your device is after it’s been rooted, you must double your awareness on the apps you allow in the system.

We assume, of course, that the hardware is in tip-top shape at this point so all you have to do is to deal with possible software or app issue. If your phone was never physically damaged or exposed to elements (heat, cold, or moisture) before, the boot loop problem was probably just a fluke.

Problem 2: Galaxy S6 edge plus red LED light remains even after unplugging the charger

Hi there! My Galaxy S6 Edge Plus has been recently giving me a bit of trouble.

After I connect the charger (phone would be on), and when I come back to check it later, the phone would have automatically switched off. The red light on top would just be there. Even after I disconnect the charger, the red light would still be there.

I would only be able to switch on the phone after I do a series of shakes and pressing of both the volume button and lock button at the sides of the phone.

Is there any specific reason as to why this is happening? If so, how can I prevent it in the future?

Solution: Hi Jazz. A red LED light is an indicator that your phone is connected to a charger and receiving power. It should turn off automatically if the charger is unplugged. If it stays on long after you’ve unplugged the charger, that may suggest that the system is still “detecting” the charger, which also means that the charging port is malfunctioning. If it’s not a charging port problem, there must be other malfunctioning components somewhere else. Knowing the exact cause of the problem is impossible for us so you would want a professional to check the device.

Problem 3: Galaxy S6 stuck in Download mode, getting “custom binary blocked by FRP Lock” error

Hey!! Just want an quick solution. I am having an Samsung S6, may be T-Mobile version Model no. SM-G920T. Now the problem is the phone stuck at downloading mode and it doesn’t even charge when we put it in charging and shows error “custom binary blocked by FRP Lock.” And the description when i go in ODIN mode with the help of volume down+ power button+home button is Current Binary : Custom System Status. : Custom FRP Lock : ON. Please help me out to solve this. Thanks.        — Umair

Solution: Hi Umair. If your phone is showing “custom binary blocked by FRP Lock” error, that’s means that you need to enter the correct Google account credentials, or you’ve already tried to but failed multiple times. There is no official way to bypass Factory Reset Protection (FRP) so we recommend that try solutions provided by other Android users. We haven’t tried any of these solutions though so there’s a chance that Samsung may have already got wind of them, making them useless at this time. Basically, these solutions involve some kind of tweaks, with others even suggesting flashing to older firmware. It’s up to you what to try but should you decide to flash the firmware, be sure to do it properly to avoid bricking the device.

Problem 4: Galaxy S6 overheating when charging

Hello. yesterday on 7th June. My S6 was working correctly. No problem occurred and then when I want to sleep, I opened up 1 application and charge it overnight. Today, when I woke up, I found my S6 is like defective, it’s black screen and seems dead. Usually that doesn’t happen.

I tried to search how to fix it and I found this page. I tried soft reset and hard reset by holding the volume down and power button for 15 seconds. Nothing works, I tried to charge it like you do, but after some minutes, it heated up and feel like touching a hot bath. It’s not like usual where my phone charged smoothly without having it to heat up, it only warms up a bit. but now it feels like too hot and I plugged out to prevent it get any hotter. I believe that going to the service will works but at the moment I don’t want to waste any money again. Do you by any chance can fix it without having myself going to the service? Solution: Hi Paulus. There may be an issue with the charging port or the battery. Overheating usually happens if a charging port is not working, or if some of the metal pins inside are shorted or broken. Sometimes, a broken battery also results to overheating, especially if refuses to receive a charge due to damage. Unfortunately, there’s nothing much that you can do at this time. Your phone needs to be checked physically so hardware diagnostics can be performed.

Problem 5: Wet Galaxy S6 won’t turn on and overheating when connected to charger

Hi. My phone was dropped in the water. I immediately removed it and turned it off. Remove the back cover and dry the sides that are wet. Turn it back on and was somehow relieved because I can still use it. I don’t know that it’s a big no. Then when it was already low in battery, i plugged it, then there started the problem. The phone was not charging and the unit started to get very hot. So I unplug it and tried to open it but it just don’t proceed to the menu, just the welcome logo for Samsung and my provider and then it will restart and restart again. My brother then tuned it off and removed the back cover and battery and put it in rice to dry. After almost 3 days when we tried to open it the screen was just black but the phone is not responding. It’s like using the phone but cannot see anything in the screen. Please can you tell me if there is still a way to fix my phone. — Grsiapco

Solution: Hi Grsiapco. The Galaxy S6 and S6 edge do not enjoy water-resistance protection like the S7 and S8 so it’s pretty safe to assume that water must have damaged the hardware. If you’re lucky and the damage is only isolated in the screen assembly, replacing the said part may bring back the normal functions of your phone. Have the phone checked by a professional and let them decide whether or not a repair is worth it. Keep in mind that in most cases like this, multiple components tend to malfunction at once so replacing a single component, like a bad screen assembly or charging port may not really fix other issues afterwards. We’re not really enthusiastic about telling you to have your S6 repaired but if phone replacement is out of the question, you may want to risk spending a few hundred dollars on an unguaranteed repair.

Problem 6: Galaxy S6 Recent apps button makes clicking sound

HELP!! This is very frustrating. I had a problem with phantom clicking a couple of months ago where my Recent apps button (bottom left button next to the home button) started clicking over and over for a few days. no matter what I tried, it wouldn’t stop, and then bam … it just stopped.

On Sunday it started again. Only this time it started to affect my battery. I was on a service call working on a 66 block with GuestTek, when my phone just died, went black. Had to use a cordless phone to try and troubleshoot. Anyways, I get in the car to head home and all of a sudden, my battery went from 0 to 70 percent in seconds. A little while later, back to 0 percent and now it won’t charge at all! If its plugged in, I can get it to power up, but I still have the Recent app button clicking, so I can’t do anything. And to make matters much worse, I have the S6 that does not open, so I cannot simply pop out the battery…do you have a magic trick to resolve these issues? — Robin

Solution: Hi Robin. Your Galaxy S6 does not have a mechanical part inside so whatever is causing the clicking sound must either be coming from the speaker or an overheated component like a charging port. We haven’t experienced this issue with an overheated phone before though so there’s really no telling what it may be. To to observe if the clicking sound happen on other modes. We can’t see what any software glitch can lead to a clicking sound in the Recent app button area but there’s really nothing much that you can do right now.

Below are the steps on how to restart the phone to alternate modes and the respective follow up troubleshooting that you can try (if you can successfully boot the phone of course):

Boot in Recovery mode:

  1. Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy logo shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  4. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  6. You can either wipe the cache partition or do a factory reset when in this mode.

Boot in Download Mode:

  1. Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume DOWN keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy logo shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume DOWN keys.
  4. Wait until the Download screen appears.
  5. If you can boot the phone in download mode but not in other modes, that means that your only way out may be to flash a stock or custom firmware.
  6. Use Google to look for a guide on how to do it.

Boot in safe mode:

  1. Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Press and hold the Power button.
  3. Once the Samsung Galaxy logo appears, release the Power key and immediately press and hold the Volume Down button.
  4. Continue holding the button until the phone finishes rebooting.
  5. Once you see the text “Safe mode” at the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume Down button.
  6. The only difference of safe mode from normal mode is that the former prevents third party apps from running. If you can boot the phone in safe mode but not in normal mode, uninstall all apps until the issue (that prevents you from booting normally) is eliminated.

Remember, if your remains dead or the clicking sound stays, have the phone checked by Samsung or independent service center.

Problem 7: Sprint Galaxy S6 edge won’t work with Boost Mobile network, keeps searching for service messages

I recently switched my Sprint Samsung S6 edge over to Boost Mobile and it worked fine for the first few days but now all I get is searching for service messages at the top of the screen. It works for a few minutes then will cut out again. I troubleshoot with Boost for two hours with no avail. I factory defaulted the phone, I tried changing the network settings, I’m at a loss now. Any help that might work would be amazing. It’s running Android 7.0 by the way. — Trisha

Solution: Hi Trisha. If your phone was working with Boost Mobile before, something must have been changed in your phone to cause the problem. Try to remember if there was anything you did differently between the time that you first transferred to Boost and the time that the issue started happening. Did you install an app or change some device settings? Did you root the phone or flash a non-official firmware? That particular activity may have changed the network configuration of your phone, which led to this problem right now.

If you never did anything different at all, we’re afraid that your only option is to continue working with Boost. A third party support team like us can’t help you if the issue is network related. We also don’t know the status of your phone’s software so we can’t tell where the issue may lie.

We know though that CDMA phones like the ones from Verizon and Sprint are sometimes problematic when used in other networks. If Boost will say that your account with them is in order, you should look for an electronic shop that can help you modify the software so it works with Boost. The specifics in this regard are very technical and we don’t cover them in this blog. If a third party shop was the one who configured your phone so it could work with Boost before, consider bringing the phone to them again.

And, make sure to ask them for tips on how to prevent this issue from happening again. Keep in mind that your phone still runs the original Spring firmware, though it was slightly modified (network unlocked) so it can work with non-Sprint firmware. In most cases, doing a factory reset returns all software settings to the original configuration, which means that your phone may have lost the modifications that allowed it to run in non-Sprint networks.

Problem 8: Galaxy S6 turns on but screen stays black

Okay. My phone seems to be active, meaning being able to charge and can be noticed; phone can receive messages due to ringer and color notifier, but the screen won’t turn on. All it does is stay completely black, although touch does work. How do i fix it!?        Rosie.larson1092

Solution: Hi Rosie.larson1092. First, you want to try a soft reset. This is often an effective solution for a frozen or unresponsive device that packs non-removable batteries like the S6. Here’s how:

  1. Press and hold the Power and Volume down buttons for 12 seconds.
  2. Use the Volume down button to scroll to the Power Down option.
  3. Press the Home key to select.

If the screen remains black, you then want to check if you can make it to work by booting to alternate modes (refer to the steps above). If you’ll get the same result, the screen must be broken. Send it in for repair or replacement.

Problem 9: Galaxy S6 credit card reader won’t connect with Intuit Quickbooks app

My Samsung Galaxy S6 will no longer connect with my credit card reader for my business (Intuit Quickbooks). Before I finally gave in and allowed the updates, it worked perfectly fine but now it will not connect at all. I’ve tried powering the phone off and then back on several times …. but no luck! I also contacted the “Intuit tech team” and no luck there either. Please help! — Dtrm2000

Solution: Hi Dtrm2000. For issues happening after installing an Android update, wiping the cache partition and factory reset are often effective solutions. Make sure that you do them first. Here’s how they’re done:

Wipe S6 cache partition

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, and Power key.
  3. When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
  4. When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
  5. Press the Volume Down key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  6. Press the Power key to select.
  7. When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  8. Press the Power key to restart the device.

S6 Factory reset

  1. Create a backup of your important files such as photos, videos, contacts etc. You can use Smart Switch for this task. If the problematic app holds important information that can’t be copied to your computer using Smart Switch, make sure to contact Intuit first to ask for tips how to back them up.
  2. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge.
  3. Press and hold the Volume Up, Home and Power keys together.
  4. When the device powers on and displays ‘Power on logo’, release all keys and the Android icon will appear on the screen.
  5. Wait until the Android Recovery Screen appears after about 30 seconds.
  6. Using the Volume Down key, highlight the option, ‘wipe data/factory reset’ and press the Power key to select it.
  7. Press the Vol Down button again until the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted and then press the Power key to select it.
  8. After the reset is complete, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key to restart the phone.

If the problem won’t be fixed by these two solutions above, make sure that you install the latest Android update. You also want to ensure that the apps in question are fully updated and compatible with your Android version. Remember, not all apps receive updates to make them work with newer Android operating systems so you must talk to their developers to ensure that they are indeed compatible.
