UberMedia Shuts Down Twidroyd Migrates Android Users To UberSocial For Android

One of the most popular, and the first Twitter client for Android is no more.  Our good friend Chris Chavez at Phandroid is reporting that UberSocial, Twidroyd’s parent company, has shut down Twidroyd and is now migrating Twidroyd users to the new UberSocial for Android.

UberSocial, Twidroyd and Uber Twitter are all owned by the same company, UberMedia.  Twidroyd was obviously the Android version while UberTwitter was the version for RIM’s Blackberry OS.  UberSocial was the iPhone version of the app.  UberMedia has now rolled all of the apps into one brand, UberSocial.  Twidroid was one of the original Android Twitter clients available at the release of the G-1 phone.

More after the break

Twidroyd was originally spelled Twidroid however they changed the name over the potential threat of a lawsuit from Lucas Arts over the word “Droid”.  To protect themselves from the threat Twidroid replaced the “i” with a “y”.

Back on February 18th UberMedia’s Twidroyd and UberTwitter were suspended by Twitter. In a blog post Twitter’s Carolyn Penner said:

“These violations include, but aren’t limited to, a privacy issue with private Direct Messages longer than 140 characters, trademark infringement, and changing the content of users’ Tweets in order to make money,”

Now it seems that UberMedia has a multi social networking strategy all under the same umbrella.  For those people longing for original Twidroyd, the new UberSocial for Android includes a Twidroyd theme. For those premium Twidroyd users there are directions as to what to do for your premium subscription, head over to the source link for that.
