Firmware issues are now very common to Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge owners especially after the rollout of the Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update. While many complained about not having been able to install the firmware, there have been a lot of users who complained about a problem or two after the update and I addressed some of those issues below.

Read on to learn more about these problems and how to deal with them in case you’d encounter one in the future. If you’ve already contacted us regarding a related issue, then try to see if your concern is among the ones I addressed.

Q: “Hi I put my phone on the side board when I looked at it, it was like static on the screen like an old TV white noise since then the phone won’t turn on it is either black screen or the Samsung Android screen on and off I plugged it in yet the phone does not seem to be charging only the battery icon flickering this has been the same for a few hours and I don’t want to do a factory reset as I will loose so much. Can you help please? — Tasha

A: Troubleshooting is difficult enough but what makes it even more complicated for us is when you tell us “Hey, I have a problem and I want to do everything to fix it except this and that.” I understand why you won’t reset your phone and that makes our options limited as well. So, for that, here’s a couple of things you can do:

  • First, try to press the Volume down and Power buttons for 10 to 15 seconds to see if the phone can perform the Forced Reboot procedure. If so, then problem solved, if not, then try the next suggestion…
  • Send your phone in for repair because it appears like the problems you mentioned are caused by water damage. In this case, not even the reset can help you.

Q: “It’s been a couple weeks since upgrading to marshmallow from lollipop but all of a sudden my phone stopped connecting to WiFi and nobody else is having a problem with WiFi, whether it’s at home or work. Sprint said they see no problem with my phone and this was a problem with the new operating system. The only way I can use Internet is by having my phone set to mobile data, which is using all my Gb. Do you think this is an operating system problem and what do you suggest I do?

A: There were actually a lot of owners who encountered this problem shortly after updating their phones to Marshmallow. Since you asked for our help, here are the things I suggest you do:

  • Delete all existing Wi-Fi connections with your phone and then let it scan and reconnect to a network. It might be a minor issue with the connection between your phone and your router.
  • Since this is a firmware related concern as it started after updating the device to Marshmallow, then it’s time you wiped the cache partition to delete all possible system caches that got corrupted. Refer to the instructions below.
  • If wiping the cache partition didn’t fix the problem, then you have no other choice but to backup all your data, files, music, pictures, etc. and do the Master Reset. Instructions below…

How to Delete the System Cache

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, and Power key.
  3. When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
  4. When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
  5. Press the Volume Down key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  6. Press the Power key to select.
  7. When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  8. Press the Power key to restart the device.

How to Master Reset Galaxy S6 Edge

  1. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up, Home and Power keys together.
  3. When the device powers on and displays ‘Power on logo’, release all keys and the Android icon will appear on the screen.
  4. Wait until the Android Recovery Screen appears after about 30 seconds.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, highlight the option, ‘wipe data/factory reset’ and press the Power key to select it.
  6. Press the Vol Down button again until the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted and then press the Power key to select it.
  7. After the reset is complete, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key to restart the phone.

Q: “Have tried a reset but cannot get my phone out of boot loop.  The screen cannot pass Samsung home screen. I messed up rooting it so I have Odin. What do I do.?!!!!! Odin isn’t working.

A: You should have also mentioned the kind of rooting you did as well as the firmware you tried to flash after it failed. For us modders, if something goes wrong during the flashing of third-party ROMs and firmware, we always go back to the basic–install the stock firmware. Have you tried that already? If so, then let the technician fix the problem for you.

Q: “My phone was doing fine just before I charged it. It was at 30% when I went to charge it but when I came back, my phone won’t turn on anymore. I try plugging in to a different outlet and even try it on my laptop but my phone is still not responding. The LED light is out and I can’t turn it on at all. what should I do?

A: This problem might range from a simple system crash to a serious hardware issue. This is what I suggest you do:

  • First, do the Forced Reboot by pressing both the Volume down and Power keys together for 10 to 15 seconds. If it were a minor system crash and if the phone still has enough power left, it should reboot normally.
  • Try booting it in safe mode just to rule out the possibility that one or some third-party app is causing the problem. Refer to the instructions below.
  • If the phone won’t boot in safe mode either, it’s time you booted it up in recovery mode to find out of it’s capable of even just that because if so, then it might be just a firmware issue and not a hardware one.
  • If it booted successfully in recovery mode, you can then proceed to wipe the cache partition or do the reset.
  • If all else fails, then it’s possible it’s a hardware problem and you need to send it in for repair.

How to boot Galaxy S6 Edge in Safe Mode

  1. Turn off your Galaxy S6 Edge.
  2. Press and hold the Power key.
  3. When ‘Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge’ appears, immediately release the Power key and then press and hold the Volume Down button.
  4. Continue holding the Volume Down button until the phone finishes the restart.
  5. When you see Safe Mode on the lower left corner of the screen, release the button.

How to boot in Recovery Mode

  1. Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, and Power key.
  2. When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
  3. When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.

Q: “Very slow performance with anything i do. especially internet browsing. i do play alot of games, and i am guilty of installing and uninstalling games that i no longer like. Red Flag! Im sure that isn’t helping at all. The apps i listed above are just a few that i could remember. i also take pictures, not excessively, but i keep them in the Gallery, and Photos app. Possible issues? Thank you.

A: There’s one way to find out if your third-party apps and games are causing this problem–boot your phone in safe mode. By doing so, all your downloaded apps will be temporarily disabled leaving pre-installed ones running. If one of your apps caused it, then the phone should work normally in safe mode without lags or freezes. But either way, I think it’s time you did the master reset just to give your phone a fresh start.

Q: “Since upgrading to Marshmallow, Bluetooth will no longer connect to audio in my vehicle, only the phone. Also, when the phone sleeps, the keyboard will not close. It stays in the foreground, and I can’t remove it without finding the last App I used it in, and closing it from there.

A: I don’t want to give you false hope here. The Bluetooth issue may not be fixed as it’s often a compatibility issue that even Samsung can’t solve. There have been so many issues like yours that after an update, the phone can no longer interact with the Bluetooth in their cars. They called Samsung and told to contact car manufacturer. When they contacted their car manufacturer, they were told it’s a Samsung problem, which I also believe is true. Why? Because the phone was working fine prior to the update. There is one thing that might be able to fix this, master reset. There’s no guarantee and it’s a hassle to backup your data but if Bluetooth is important to you, then it’s worth it.

Q: “My phone notified me it had an update for android marshmallow and it didn’t install because I didn’t have Wi-Fi. I went to my system update and each time I hit download update it immediately says unsuccessful and to try again. I’ve restarted my phone and that didn’t work either. I’m not sure what to do.

A: If the update was channeled through your service provider, there’s a chance that it has already been taken down from the server and is no long available for your phone. You should contact your carrier or service provider to see if they can still push it. You may also contact Samsung if you have the international version of the Galaxy S6 Edge.

Another option you have is to use Smart Switch via a computer. If there’s an available update, then application must be able to see it, too, and download it.

You can also manually install the firmware by downloading it to your computer and use Odin to flash it to your phone. This, of course, needs advanced knowledge in flashing a firmware.

Q: “I just installed the marshmallow update. Phone keeps resetting, I cant access messages+ and everything is moving much slower then before. Is there a way to just uninstall this update and go back to what I had prior?

A: Nope, there’s no way to uninstall an update but you can manually downgrade from Marshmallow. There are, however, risks involved which may lead to the bricking of your phone so proceed at your own risk.

However, since you’re complaining about poor performance, I believe a reset can fix it. Have you tried that already?
