Thinnest Smartphone in the world

BBK Unveils Vivo X1, World’s Thinnest Smartphone with Android Jelly Bean for $400

Since the beginning of the year, smartphone manufacturers have been on overdrive trying to outdo each other on all fronts – from screen resolution and battery power to processor speeds and cores and RAM sizes.  Design has always been one of the most crucial factors that buyers consider when choosing a smartphone and it has always been tricky to keep smartphones very thin and light without reducing their processing and battery powers.  As of now, the thinnest smartphone in the market is the Vivo X1, just launched in China.  BBK, the manufacturer of the Vivo X1 phone, is Oppo’s child company, the company that just unveiled the Oppo Find 5 smartphone and the Ulike 2 ladies’ smartphone.

Despite its 6.5 mm thickness, the Vivo X1 packs a dual core 1.2 GHz processor, 1 GB of RAM and comes with a 4.7 inch IPS screen with a not-so-impressive 960 x 540 pixels resolution.  The phone comes with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system and 16 GB onboard memory, 8 megapixels rear camera and a 1.3 megapixels front camera for video calls.  Despite the thinness, it packs an impressive 2,000 mAh battery and has a microSD card slot to expand the memory by up to 32GB.

The Vivo X1 is set to be released in China but it is not clear yet whether the parent company, Oppo, will market the phone outside the Asian market.  What is interesting is that over the past 6 months we have seen some of the finest phones and tablets coming out of China and independent retailers are currently making them available in the North American market.  Their penetration in the market should cause jitters amongst major manufacturers especially since devices coming out of China are always of good quality and come at a cheaper price.  They haven’t really penetrated the market because of poor service and often lack of support to customers.

The specs of the Vivo X1 are not that impressive and it may be marketed as a mid-range light phone but the price may be a bit steep for a phone marketing itself on the design and weight factor only.  It is expected that the X1 will retail at 2,498 Yuan (about $400) which is very steep considering the many high performance smartphones such as Oppo Find 5 and Xiaomi M2 with quad core processors.

We cannot tell for sure whether this is the actually the thinnest smartphone in the market, but frankly this should not really be a front in which a phone is marketed only.  The Vivo X1 is sleek, elegant, stylish and based on previous Oppo phones, it most likely is of great quality as well.  If you are interested in this phone, you should know that the phone could as well pass off as one of the best equipped multimedia phones in the market including a high performance Cirrus Logic CS4398 digital-analog converter and a CS8422 sample-rate converter and comes with Beyerdynamic MMX 71 IE earbuds.

The Vivo X1 is now available for pre-order and should be shipping any time before the holiday season begins.  BBK is also said to be working on a new smartphone that will come with more impressive specs including a 13 megapixels camera, an edge-to-edge 1080p display and a quad core processor.  Let us wait and see how these phones will penetrate the market.
